Always a good feeling at the end of the day when you can look back at your truck and say...yea I did ALL that.
I usually say that after I get off the toilet.[:@][:'(][&:]

Well here's my quesiton guys. I'm pretty confident with what I would like to do. My goal is to bring the truck back down to it's original size and put 33" tires on her (285s). But this is what I'd like to know. When I buy new wheels for the truck, if I buy 17x10 wheels, will that make it so the tires will stick out past the fender flares a little bit. Since I know I'll be a little bumming that the truck won't be as high, I at least would like the truck to have a very wide stance. I know there are a lot of guys here who lift their trucks and put big tires on, so obviously you guys made compromises with yourselves with the advatanges and disadvatanges of having a lifted truck with big tires. But me, I bought this truck like this, so I don't hold any sentimental values about the lift and tires. I bought this truck because I saw its potential. I mean look at it, it's a beautiful truck, its the sport/offroad, has all the nifty gadgets with her, it's an 01, and she has the 5.9L. I knew I had to replace the transmission eventually, but I had hoped to get at least another year out of it. But, as I said before my last post, my grandparents called me and told me when I left their house, there was transmission oil all over their driveway. This would explain why the truck drove fine on the way up, but the next morning when I left their driveway, immediatly the truck began not shifting...I'm just confused why it would start to leak suddenly over night. So there is a chance still I may not need to replace this transmission. It goes to the transmission shop tomorrow morning, and they will obviously be able to tell me if it's something that can be replaced, or if it's a junker. Anyways, my little dream is to bring it back down to it's stock height, get some nice wide flashy wheels with 285s on them. This way the truck will be lower to the ground with a mean wide stance. Plus, it's not like the truck is going to be like lowered or anything, it will still be a a big truck, 285s are still a huge tire, just not huge compared to 35s[8D]. This way I can get everything I want out of my truck. I'll be able to speed like I love to do, the transmission won't be as abused with the smaller tires, it will have more stability, I'll be able to work with it more realisitically, and be safer in the wintery conditions up here. I understand the lift kit deal, but it's not for me. Even now with the 35s I really dont offroad with my truck, it's not my style. I don't like it getting all beaten up, and components really take a beating. I knew nothing about mudding when I bought this truck, it was all new to me. So I just kind of went with what it had. But now that it's time to fix this transmission, I'd like to bring it to my accustoms. Like I siad, by no means will this truck be small. It will still be a big boy for a 1500, yet I can make it more off an offroad/street truck, which ultimately appeals to me most. DO you guys think the 17x10 wheels will make it so the tires will stick out past my fender flares? Also, what size tire should I get in the 285 size, like how wide?? Thanks!

I swear, there is so many veriations in these trucks!!!

I cant belive there is people with stock size trucks compaining about loosing speed up a hill...
I was just on my way back from work, on the highway, againt the wind (and its really blowing right now) I was holding a solid 85mph... and im in michgan... its basically sand dunes everyware... there is one big hill where I loose like 2 mph at this speed... but thats keeping the pedal in 1 spot not moving it... and ive got a 5.2 liter with 3.55s AND slightly oversize tires... Im not bragging im just pointing out how many differences there are in these trucks from truck to truck.

I know what you mean about it feeling like it goes everywhere... mines like that but its mostly from have a horridly bad track bar, and this locker in the back likes to drift my front end side to side when the load changes... I remember when I bought my truck, and it was really tight... basically felt like a new truck, and I took it on the highway and I was like WTF... it kinda wandered around.. but I was used to a small car... these are heavy trucks with solid axles... and they arnt "pussyed" up like the 4.6liter ford your talking about... those trucks suspinsion wise is a whole lot more car like and will handle alot better... but WILL NOT take the abuse these trucks will.

I don't know. I think the tires sticking out the side has more to do with the backspacing than the width of the wheel. With a 285 it's narrow enough I wouldn't run a 10" wide wheel. I'd for sure get a 8" wide one. If you want it to stick out just get one with low backspacing. That tire is narrow enough I bet it would be really hard to get the bead to seat and I'd worry about popping the bead off easily. My 305/70R16 is the narrowest I'd run on a 10" wide wheel. You could probably make a 285 fit but with a tire that narrow just no need for a 10" wide one.

If I wanted to run a 10" wide wheel I'd get atleast 305"s although 305"s for a 17" wheel will be a bigger tire than for a 16". I like my 16"s and would recommend those. You can probably find tires cheaper for and also not have to grind the calipers down. I'd check them out for sure. If I was going to change wheels and tires a 16" wheel would be what I went with. The only reason I'd go with a 17" is if I wanted to keep my current tires.

Another thing I would consider is with a wide wheel or low backspacing where they stick out like that it will put a lot more stress on stuff so be expecting to replace hubs, ball joints, and stuff like that a lot more often. I just thought I'd make sure you understand that as I don't want you to be upset if you buy wheels then parts really start wearing out.

Like I said though I'd really have the front end parts checked out as they may already be worn out from having that much lift without the rest of the pieces needed for it.

Yeah, that tranny shop is an autoshop too, so I will have them do a rundown on everything. But in regards to 16" wheels, I just dont see it happening. IF I get 285s, I'll have to run with the offroad rims until i can afford wheels. I pretty much want to getthose 35" tires off the truck immediatly after the transmission is fixed. I dont want to fix the transmission and then drive around with that lift and 35s until i can afford 16" wheels and tires for it. So thats the problem I have with that. I mean I don't need it to stick out tremedously, I just want to make sure my truck wont look gay and have like pizza cutter tires. I want the truck to still look badass. I think a 285 is still a really big tire, but with those fender flares I have on the truck, it will silly if the tires are in a lot more than the flares. I also dont want to get too big of a tire past 285 because then it's getting close to a 35" tire again. I guess what I'm asking is what wheel size/tire size should I get that will fit the stock offroad edition suspension that will still give the truck a nice wide stance, and sitill look badass. I know I will be suffering from some withdrawls when I take the lift down because I really do love the way the truck looks right now, but I dont ever even use the darn lift, I'm not an offroad guy, thats why I use my 4 wheelers for. So whats the best compromise for me when I take the lift off. Think 285s with a 17x8.5 - 9" wide wheels would give the truck a nice wide stance and still have a nice sized lift look to it?

I don't think you are understanding backspacing. A 10" wide wheel and an 8" wide wheel could stick out the same depending on the backspacing you get. The smaller the bs the more the wheel is going to stick out. I believe the backspacing on your current rims is 5.5". And they're 8" wide. (i could easily be wrong about that) So if you went with an 8" wide wheel with 4.5" backspacing they would stick out an inch further. If you went with a 10" wide wheel with 5.5" backspacing they would stick out 2" further.
