Anyone who swapped a crank pos sensor
Hey,
I am pretty sure that the wire i am having trouble with is going to the crank position sensor. The wire has a connector at the end of it (mine is burnt...literally), and it goes to the top of the tranny bellhousing by the passenger side. I am feeling around and can't find the mounting bolts. This thing feels like it is just a connector attached to a wire that goes to the bellhousing.
I feel lots of bolts down there, but not like the pic that Haynes shows. I am wondering if i need to take off the fenderwell to get to it.
Anyone doen this and can give me a tip. This is the last sensor that I need to replace because of the fire. Well, i also have some vac lines that i have no clue about how they are routed.
Thanks,
Dan

What does a Piece Of $hit sensor measure?
I guess the 4x2 and 4x4 trans's are set up diffrently. I dont remember any sensors on the pass side. If its that same sensor I was talking about earlier but on a diffrent side you might just be able to rip it off hard because the clip is on the harness side not the sensor side. Either way check out which side the clip is on (not the reciever) and see if you can just break it off and muscle your way to victory.

I did it,
the bolts are just behind the pass side head. just to the left of the tranny dipstick tube. I wrote a thread on how to get at it if you've got big hands:

No breaking it off, the sensor is mounted to a steel plate and bolted down. Don't forget to pull the rubber boot out so you don't accidentally shove it into the bell housing when you put in the new one.

I thought you did this before, i must have seen it in the DIY. But after feeling around i thought there was no possible way that anyone would post a DIY on doing this. Too bad the fire burned the sensor wire. Otherwise i would be sitting pretty. Can i just splice the wires from a new one...actually that would be bad.
Indy,
how did you get that connector off the tranny. it is the connector that goes over the top of the tranny. I can't figure out how to squeeze it to get it off.
Thanks everyone.

Either that or its a dual press clip where both sides need to be depressed at the same time in order to pull it apart.
I think it is the side depress clip. I wish it was a lift clip. THese things harden over the years and depressing it is almost impossible. I think i will just try to break it apart to get it off. I will be getting a new harness and don't need that end anymore once its off. Thats last ditch, but i will keep working that tomorrow.
Aim,
THe DIY is great. Knowing the size hex wrench will help a lot. I may need to take a wire bush to it to get the dirt off so i can get the hex key in cleanly.

If its the double depress one, i used two flatheads and wedged them in there to depress it.

Another problem i had when i replaced my crank sensor was the part itself. My truck would shut off when it got up to operating temp and threw the code for the crank sensor. I went tomy local auto parts store and picked one up, threw it in andit would'nt start, i did the usual checks so i thought i got a bad sensor. Returned it for another, threw that one in and still nothing, put the old one back in and it would start right up. I ended up going to the dealership and getting one, threw itin and the truck is good as new now.It also was cheaper at the dealershipthan it was at the parts store.
Usually you can just squirt some brake parts cleaner back thereto clean them out. Might be able to use that on the clip too, or the electric parts cleaner if you're concerned about it being sensor safe. Everything back there is a damn blind fumble to get to; the cleaner might be easier. I did recall reading somewhere that the older models might not have the allen heads, or that they might be a different size so you're mileage may vary with that bit of info.
When you take the crank sensor out, be careful with it. It's basically a magnet on the tip that can pick up little metal shavings and I think I remember HankL telling me they are fragile and prone to breaking.
