Transmission***UPDATE
OK "FOR NOW" i will give you the benifiet of the doubt[sm=badidea.gif][sm=deal.gif],this is why i started doing my own maintenence on my truck and wife's vehicle , because before we got togeather she would just take it to the shop and not even knowing anything about the problem and "just" PAY THE SHOP BILL IN THE END! (not anymore)
Yeah, trust me, been there done that. And sometimes you don't even have a choice. Your at their mercy basically. They know how to fix it, and you don't. I also really hate having my truck in shops. I always get it back with the interior smelling like *******, the carpet all ****ed up, and the trucks exterior coated in a fine gloss of dust etc lol. I can't stand it. Obviously there are some things that just arne't plausible for me to be doing, some things take years of experience along with education. A lot of these mechanics went to school for this ****. But it's the stupid **** that I at least want to conquer right now, that's my goal. I want to be able to little maintance **** that can save me some good bucks like the oil changes, tune-ups, rotating the tires. Then, when I start to get a little swagger going, then I can step it up. Trust me, I don't even have the money anymore to pay these guys anymore. When I get my truck back, I'll start trying to do some tasks and ask you guys for help. I know I'd like to clean my throttle body, and when I'm in there, I can see if there is puddling oil down there, so it'd be a good excuse to look inside there.
Start small...and go from there. Like some of the guys are saying, start with your oil changes. Once you conquer that, move on to changing out plugs, etc. You will start to see that each repair you do starts to mesh with the next one and you learn from each.
Don't expect to be able to pull your engine out or drop a tranny at first. It all takes time and patience. Know you limits BUT don't be too scared to take a chance and try something. If it gets overwhelming stop and ask a question or choose to have a shop do it. The only way to learn is to try though.
I have been working on my vehicles since I got my first one back in the late '80s and can do most regular repairs. I know my limits and don't really get transmission internals so I leave them alone. That's just me though.
One last thing---take advantage of Napa, Autozone, Advance and others loan-a-tool programs. You won't have all the tools at first to do a lot of suspension repairs and other types but borrowing a tool from the parts places can get you thru it in the mean time. Plus there are some tools that you just don't really need to buy because you won't ever need them again. Hell, I paid $70 for a coil spring compressor at Napa years ago just to see that Autozone had them out to loan for free. I used it once and haven't used it since. $70 is now just hanging on my garage wall...
Good luck and remember everyone is here and I live 1/2 hour from ya too. If I can help with a tool or anything prior to you getting stuff let me know. It took me quite a few years to accumulate what I have but that's how it goes.
