Yeah, I told him today that he could really snap an axle at any time... I don't know what he is planning to do. I will mention it to him again, though. I've been tryin to get him to get on the forum.

4K is a lot of $$ for a tranny.
I would definitely ask exactly what is upgraded from stock. and get it in writing.
It better be new internals with HD gears, more clutches, shift kit, and HD converter.
are they rebuilding your tranny or building a new one and just swapping it in.
Ask if your existing tranny lines are good enough or if their installing new.

I'm really worried were gonna see a very long post from you soon saying "The tranny shop F*CKED me over"...

I'm a little worried about that myself but hopefully we wont and he will have a great experience with them. The reason I say this is he never seems to have got a list of what was going in there. They just seem to have told him it was basic stuff like a higher or lower stall torque converter. In one post he said it was higher at 2800rpms or something and in the next he said it was lower at 1500rpms. So idk what it is. A deeper pan which helps keep it cooler but it's not something that will make the transmission that much better. It won't fix all the issues it has. The other downside is that while it takes longer to get hot if it does get hot it's a lot more fluid that takes a lot longer to cool down. Then a big external cooler which most everyone installs anyway. I haven't heard him say anything that would make that heavy duty. Now maybe they are and just haven't said what they are doing to make it heavy duty but so far I'm a little doubtful.

Wanye at APS sends you a list of of whats in his when he gives you a price quote and it's quite a bit of internal stuff done besides just a shift kit and new torque converter. Dodge trannys have soo many issues that need to be addressed to make them reliable it's not funny.

Hopefully he will have a good experience though.

I did fail to get a list from them, but he assured me over and over again that this transmission was not a typical dodge replacement. Their dodge replacement was only $2600 with everything done. He wanted to know what direction I was going with the truck though. I told him I planned to keep the big tires and had a desire to continue adding torque and h/p to the truck. I also told him I was looking at other aftermarket transmissions, and I asked him if they offered something like they were. He told me this transmission is their top of the line heavy duty tranny that they put in on the dodge cummins that come in. He went out back with me and showed me a transmission they were building for a 500+ horsepower powerstroke that the guy was going to use for the track. He told me I was getting the very same torque converter and tranny. They are basically put in a heavy duty steep/strip transmission that will be designed for a lot of torque and carrying around the bigger tires. I looked the man right in the eye and asked him, is this transmission going to be designed specifically for my truck and will it be designed to handle the big tires and extra h/p and torque for the years ahead. He told me sir, I wouldnt back this transmission with a 3 year/70,000 mile warranty if we weren't completely confident that we couldnt build you a transmission specifically designed for your truck and your needs. So I know it's a lot of money, but I didnt want to spend an average amount of money to get an average transmission. I wanted to be insured that they were going to build me an entirely new transmission that was ready for anything and would last the life of the truck. I even spent the extra $300 to get that darn tranny pan on there just for good measures. They seem confident that I wont be dissapointed, for $4,000, I'm sure they wouldnt take a chance of putting in a transmission that can't handle the truck. And if itcan't handle it, they'll have issues with me. IT's got a 3 year warranty on it, so I'll have plenty of time to assess the transmission. They are really nice people though and obviously have a lot of experience with guys like me with big trucks. He said this was their top of the line product, so I'll take his word for it.

They can't put the same transmission thats going behind a powerstroke into your truck or even the cummins. They are different transmissions which without a lot of custom work wouldn't bolt up. So while they may have been building one for a powerstroke you won't be getting that same transmission. Yours might be built similar but it's no way it's going to be the same.

The solution would be to take another 4000 loan and put a cummins in there.

Hey, I know that this is more than just a truck for you...it is therepy. You can't put a price on doing something that takes your mind off of an intense job like you have. I have worked with mentally chanllenged individuals myself. I think you would be right in taking advice from some of the others that from now on watch out for these loans. They will be easier to get, and if something does go wrong you could get yourself in a bind. Life comes at you fast and you could have two kids and a wife in four years! I had 3 kids myself in the space of 45 months! This loan will cost you 4700 by the end of it. Trust me, sometimes $98 feels like all the money in the world.

BTW:Congratulations on the new tranny, you will love it.

Yup, and good luck finding a wife who is going to understand why your making payments on a transmission that you had installed years ago in a truck you may or may not even still have. Women are weird about stuff like that, not sure why. [sm=confused06.gif]

lol true, but I wouldn't let chicks jump your **** about your truck. I'd tell her unless she can climb under my truck, shove the motor in her mouth and make the driveshaft spin out of her ******* I need a transmission more than I need her

not to treadjack, but I found a junkyard tranny for under $100. I have no idea if it ran or is blown, but I would like to get it for practice. I think it would be neat to try a learn what to do with it.
My tranny has been giving me problem for over a year now, and it leaves puddles in its wake. Any day could be the day. I think I could buy this junkyard tranny and strip it and rebuild it. If I screw it up I am not out that much. I will need to research this forum for all the prior re-building knowledge.

But, my truck is only my mule, I don't drive it every day, it has been out for the last month and I had "fun" working on it, and I always wanted to try trannys. That and paint and body are the only automotive areas I am dumbfounded on.

I have been quoted $2000 for a rebuild. I just wanted someone to stop the leak. I just went yesterday, and was told I need a new tranny. It is actually doing better now then it was then. I think the slipping is 100% due to keeping the fluid levels low. If I could fix the seal, that might be all I need. But I have never pulled a tranny, kinda of afraid. But I'm the type of person who would rather spend an arm and a leg f'n it up myself rather than pay some one to do it. Plus I want to make it nearly bulletproof.

If the tranny goes out I may let the truck sit in storage for a while, because I have eyes on a $6000, 03 four door with the 4.7.(Love having a close friend with a dealership ) I can see buying a new ride more than a part. Maybe thats why I have four cars and a truck, to be honest though two cars don't have insurance, so I leave them in the backyard (my tailgater jaguar, and project 5.0 stang).
