Take it from me; unless your want your exhuast louder, or your down on funds, get a hi-flow cat. But if you want it gutted, you'd be better off with a pipe rather than an empty chamber.
I had my converter gutted out today while having my muffler put on and it will do and I like the way it sounds. I want to get a hi-flow cat for the truck, but mine was stopping up so it will do for now, and luckly no engine light has come on yet after driving around all day.

Some states cant do that. in CT we have to go through emissions and thats a big no no. but i do agree with you. If you wanted to have a pipe there (helps with flow), gut the cat and slide a pipe through it. that way the exhaust connects to that pipe and you dont lose any flow from the large chamber. Its a thought, havn't done it myself. I would just gut it and stick it back up. my father did, and i like the way his sounds.
