Default 408 question

Ok, so i have been looking into this for a few months now. What is all needed to do this 408 conversion.

If i understand this right...pull the engine, get it bored an extra 0.040, put in a new cam, pistons, roller rockers, and heads.

what else???

NowI have about 280'000 km on my engine...what are the oddsthat i can use it for this?

Or am i better getting a new block.

IfI pull the engine and re-install it myself am I right in assumeing that this will be about a 2000-2500 dollar job???

I realise krc has a complete one for around 7000 but for that price i will just buy a new truck...where as under 3000 i think i could live with.

Any thoughs???

I was thinking about doing the plenum, timing belt, and roller rocker replace but i figured if i am going into it that far why not do the whole thing???

I've been toying with the idea for some time. I am probably going to buy the bottom end built and have my heads cleaned up locally. This route is going to cost $3k-$4k. Then another $2.5k after it cooks my tranny. You will probably want to buy a SCT tuner to get it right once it's in. Your stock injectors will be overdriven a bit, so you may want to pick up some larger ones. If you don't already have an intake manifold like an air gap or m1, you should probably throw that into the mix. You're going to want a larger TB as well. If you are running stock heads, you may want to go aftermarket, and go with atleast 2.02's.
With the new SCT stuff, KRC is getting over 400 rwhp out of a 408 with RT heads. I think he is runninga pretty big cam now though.

The answer is no. You cant have everything for nothing. If you are serious, you better expect to pay money. Your not going to get a 408 and everything that goes along with it for 3k

well, by the questions you are asking, you are not going to be doing this yourself and paying someone to do this is going to be very expensive.

what is your goal?

wellmy plan was to pull the engine myself and reinstall it myself. The rest i was going to get a shop to do.

Although if i don't end up doing the conversion i will do the rollers, plenum and timing belt myself.
I work with a journeyman mechanic and have a very good friend who is alsoa journeyman mechanic so when it gets to the difficult stuff I will have them around if I need them.

The 408 just seems a little to advanced for me to do myself.

My goal is low end pulling power. I do alot of towing and need some more low end.

My other option is to drop a used v10 in...but from what i understand that is going to cost just as much if not more. That is unless anyone knows of a good used v10 w/ tranny kicking around somewhere for cheap!!!!!

Shop costs I don't know, but I think KRC wants about 2400$ for the 408 crank/rods/pistons? for about the same price you can get a 406 stroker short block from mopar (block, rods, pistons, crank, and cam?) and save yourself any machining costs for your 360, as well as sell it complete as a core (assuming you get some R/T heads and an intake, which imo would certainly be wanted if you're going to spend the coin on a stroker). I was considering going this route, but I've decided to just get a 360 short block from mopar (1600$~) and put some heads, cam etc in it....should make plenty of power. Check out this http://www.mopartsracing.com/parts/b...ml#smallblocksand this http://www.mopartsracing.com/parts/ram.html...pretty much everything you need. Note that most of the long-blocks are NOT recommended for MPI,but with a different manifold it could probably be made to work...they're probably trying to avoid the problems with the computer if you just plunked one in, an SCT or B&G whatever you prefer should have no problem making it run.

Good luck with that. If you think you're going to get a small block from Mopar anytime soon, think again.

They stopped making them. The crate motors are on nationwide backorder, and I was told a while back that DC had put a bounty out on used blocks.

Being that you are also Canadian I assume, add in another 15-25% of the cost of anything shipped from the US by the time you pay extra shipping fees, brokerage charges and tax.
