how to take this off!!!!
im trying to take the black peice off the back of my tailgate, i think it looks wierd. and it gets a dull black look to it, unless you put tire shine on it lol. but is there paint behind it, and how do you take it off,and also i want topaint the taillight covers to match my truck also. my truck is silver by the way,ot green thanks
It's glued on there pretty good. It would fit under the same category as "de-badging" as far as getting it removed. It is painted underneath it, but most likely your other paint has faded a bit in the sun, so there will be a color difference.
Use a hairdryer to heat the plastic (really the glue underneath) and some dental floss. Once the plastic warm use the dental floss to get behind the plastic to cut through the glue. Repeat as nessacery to get it all off. There are cleaners to get the reside off.
Hairdryer is good because it will not torch your truck.

Just an old guy with a truck hobby
I ripped mine off and used a 3m stripe off wheel.
wvjefo,
Can you name any cleaners specifically? Ones that will not hurt the paint. I'm looking for something kind of like that.

Thought I was posting to the guy who started the thread.
Any who. I think it is Goof Off or Goo Off. It works Ok. It will need to soak in and some elbow grease. but it doesn't hurt the paint.

I was thinking about mine as well. I think what I may do is just get some of the black spray paint that they sell at Lowes that is specifically designed for plastic, and carefully tape off everything around the trim piece, and paint it to look like new. That way I will make it look much better without haveing to worry about any differences in color shades on the tailgate from the exposed areas being faded. The paint costs maybe $5 and would make it look like new. While I'm at it, I may do all of the "originally black" trim pieces around the truck. For a small invetment in time and money, it will make the truck look a whole lot better!
I figured I would share this alternative idea in case you hadn't thought of it yet.
