I just bought a duralast from autozone tonight for preventative maintenance.

64.99 for a brand new water pump with a limited lifetime warranty, no core, not a reman. if you're changing the pump, think about doing the timing chain too, it's only about 4 more bolts.

+1 on get a new one, not a reman. i'm all for a reman in a cast iron body, but i don't like the idea of a reman in an aluminum body.

also +1 on replace your timing chain/sprocket and front seal while you're that close. if you don't there is a likelyhood you might end up with a coolant leak at the timing cover. its a sort of stupid design where coolant flows through timing cover.

yeah thats what i thought, im thinking i should be able to get this done in a single afternoon. is that reasonable? hopefully i can afford a new chain and new water pump, i guess that means new timing chain gasket as well.

be sure and replace the small water pump bypass hose.
also note the small o-ring that goes on the heater hose water pipe. it should be in the wp kit.
timing gasket kit comes with the big gasket and the front crank seal.
you will need a harmonic balance puller and a large socket and air gun, or breaker bar and a way to hold the engine from turning.

length of the job can really vary based upon how well (or not well) things go, as well as how experienced, and fast of a mechanic you are. troubles can occur getting the damn fan off [:@], broken bolts in t-stat housing. i'm very slow and deliberate and probably could not get it done in one afternoon. it would take me a whole day.

water pump (new, not rebuild) $63
t-stat $10
t-stat gasket $1
bypass hose $10
antifreeze, 2 gal $16
timing set Cloyes C-3072, $50
timing gasket kit, felpro $18
1 1/4 socket $6 - might can borrow.
harmonic balance puller - borrow from az or advance.

oh, one last thing,

IDK if this matters but some of the older Rams have a WP pulley that is bolted on with 4 bolts in a square pattern, while mine was pressed on. The autozone webpage only showed the pressed on kind, and stated that is is a direct replacement for the bolted pulleys, but I would double check with somoebody to be sure if you have a bolt on style pulley.

Advance is the same way with only offering the press on pulley with new pumps, it won't make a difference. The new one that the part stores offer are an aftermarket replacement that cuts down on having to stock two different pumps.
