Default new tranny or rebuilt

O.K lit me start by saying I searched and did not come up with much. I have to get a new tranny.[:@][:@] If you fall into the same catagory did you have if rebuilt or did you go with a new one and how has it held up??? MY truck only has 60K and I plan on keeping it so I want the next one to last. Is there different brands of clutches and stuff or is a rebuild a rebuild?
Whats your thought on a Reman from Advanced Auto?

Any and all sugestions would be great. THANKS

The remans from the parts stores leave much to be desired... Honestly, your best bet is to just find a reputable, local shop (not a big chain like AAMCO[:'(]), and talk to them about what they suggest. For what it sounds like you want, a semi-bullet proof transmisson should work for you pretty well, and you should be able to get one built and installed for $2-3000.

i had mine rebuilt in 2003, shift kit, HD internals the whole 9 yards. desinged to pull a camper. still shifts perfectly. if your gonna rebuild, make sure to do that to yours as well. if you want to buy new, then check out the fast man, or aps trannys, or dr evil trannys.

I'd look into APS or Dr. Evil. I personally went with APS. I only have a little over 1k miles on mine though but so far I really like it. They aren't the fastest company but Wayne was great to deal with other than the fact I now have a transmission I need to send back for the core and I don't seem to have anyone coming to pick it up. The shop got tired of it sitting there and gave it to me to take home and I called Wanye to get them to come to my house and they still haven't come yet. Not a huge deal since he didn't charge me the core fee just told me there would be one if I didn't want to send it back. He has been great to deal with.

I went with the Dr. Evil "Pure Evil" tranny with deep tranny pan andtowing torque converter. Billy is amazing to work with. Have over 10,000 miles on my truck since the install and no-issues. Spent a littel over $2000 delivered for my tranny and another $600 for the install. I regularly pull my 8000 lb fifth wheel and just this week, I hauled about 3000 lb of sheet rock in the bed. Love this tranny and am very satisfied with the knowledge and service from this company.

O.K. I think I got it down to 2 different shops. One installs a additional cooler besides the origional, but this guy does not replace the selonids if they are not bad and only replaces the broken or worn clutches and stuff. He also uses dextron 3 instead of ATF4, he says dextron makes it shift firmer.1600-1800 dollars plus $200 for the cooler. 1YR 12000 mile warrenty He clames that it is heavier that factory but not heavy duty.

Shop number 2 replaces everything except the case, but they bypass the origional tranny cooler and add a seprate cooler for the tranny. They use a synthetic fluid made by Kendall (can not rember the name) He said they build all of their dodge trucks trannyswith heavy duty stuff and add clutches. $2400-$2800

I am leaning toward shop number 2 I think all parts in tranny should be replaced and heavy duty.
Just not sure about the bypassing the origional cooler and adding another one.

Please give me all of your opinons and feed back!!!!!! Thanks guys!!!!!!!!!

Shop 2 sounds like your best bet, if you are going to build it, why not build it right? One thing I dont like about that though, are you sure they are bypassing the cooler in the radiator?

Shop 1: Sounds like an older guy that knows his stuff, but does not sound like the transmission will hold up as well because of the parts being used.

Well; take note of 01DodgeRam360's thread about his tranny. Kind of goes to show how well APS and Dr. Evil are doing, and local shops are not.

If I could have done it over, I would have gotten a Fastman, APS, or Dr. Evil. I just ran into a problem with getting a big warranty from them. The local shop offers a 3 year/75,000 mile warranty, and is only about 3 miles away from my house. I also had other issues that had to be addressed, so if I had went with a fastman or dr. evil, it was going to cost me about $4700 to have it installed because I was still going to need a deep dish tranny pan, bigger tranny cooler, pinion seal and tranfer case leaks fixed as well. If they fix the issue it's having now it will be worth it, but right now, I'm really in some hardcore mental pain that I just spent $4,000 and have nothing to show for it. Not to mention I still have a pending posi unit that needs to be addressed asap....it never ends my friends.
