Default Oil Pan Problem- Yall wont belive this

Ok so i got the pan off, the gasket was a little rough looking. I discovered a hole about the size of a BB in the side of the pan. Ive never seen or heard of that before. Also the pan is chipped and i dont know if that was adding to the leak or not. This explains why i have oil all over the place, when i go down the road its spewing out of that hole.

Now to my other problem. The engine in the truck is from a 98, except for the intake manifold, which is off the old engine (95), to make it work with the EGR. I have the oil pan off of the 95, but there is a difference in them. The 98 has a metal shelf in it(circled in red), as the 95 doesnt. Will i be ok just swapping the pans out like this?

Yes, remove the starter, tranny to block braces, and the dust cover and should be able to remove all of the bolts and then lower the oil pan

+1 That's exactly what I had to do.

the really wierd thing with that hole is all the metal distortion surrounding the hole. looks like that specific area had gotten super heated at one point.. maybe a reverse lightning strike? or you drove over downed electrical lines ..

very interesting to say the least.

I believe the "Shelf" is built into the oil pan to prevent oil slosh when traveling over rougher areas. This helps keep the oil pickup in oil instead of allowing under extreme conditions all of the oil to get away from the oil pickup. If the pan fits without issue and contact with the oil pickup and/or pump I would feel comfortable installing the new one.

BTW, I hope that you are replacing the oil pump while you are in there. A new Melling High Volume Pump only runs like $40 to $50 and it's like giving your engine a new heart. Just be sure to install it correctly.

i didnt think about replacing the pump, it really hasnt given me any problems. and its fairly young, 80 k miles. maybe ill look into that, but the funds are tight right now.

as for the hole, i have no idea what would have caused it. it still baffles me.[sm=confused06.gif]
