Default '96 Ram 1500 4x4 Tranny Swap - what gaskets/seals? - resolved

Folks I hope this isn't a topic beat to death - but I'm under a bit of a deadline to get the tranny over to the shop for install. Tranny is coming from a '95 Ram 1500 4x4, w/5.2L motor - and going in a '96 Ram 1500 4x4 w/5.2L motor.

Yes I lost 3rd gear on my original tranny....

Question to the part-number gurus on the boards is which gaskets or seals or other general replacement items should I be dropping off with my mechanic when I leave him the replacement tranny? My thoughts are:
[ol][*]Front pump seal / sleave - Autozone[*]Selector shaft seal - Autozone[*]Rear seal - Autozone[*]Dipstick o-ring/seal - dealer?[*]Tranny filiter kit - Autozone[*]what am I missing from this list?[/ol]
Also any advice on the subject of fluid replacement? During the engine/transmission extraction process we inadvertently tipped the whole engine tranny over resulting in much fluid coming out the dipstick hole and the tail-shaft area. My concern being having lost the "original" fluid that the tranny tested out OK with - am I going to end up with a non-functioning tranny as a result of new fluids as is commonly held concern?

I'm paying a local shop to dunk this replacement tranny in - so any/all advice on "be carefull of XXXX" is welcome and requested.

Thanks in advance,

Rally,
Wish I could help you out more, but it sounds like you've got it in hand. You can probably get the seals you need from the parts store without going to the stealership. Might do best to take the tranny over and have them look it over and say which seals they want. Then go to the parts store and get them and take them back and compare them to the originals. Any issues can be headed off immediately by you.

As far as the tranny fluid, since you dumped the original your best bet is to replace it with the factory recommended fluid which I think is ATF+3 for your tranny. The new dipstick in the new tranny should tell you exactly what you need. Wish I could help more. Good luck.

ATF+4 replaced 3 and it should not be an issue changing fluid is a good and necesary thing. The problems you are refering to is flushing a tranny and that can cause an issue because it breaks crap free and can cause a problem. Only thing I can think of (I just swapped mine out) is to be sure they get it full of fluid and I would drive it for a couple weeks and then do another filter change in case moving it around shook some junk loose.

I recommended ATF+# for 2 reasons.
First it is a 1995 tranny.
Second, it is a used tranny that has not been gone through. I would probably stay with the 95 recommended fluid unless the mechanics were gonna tear it apart to check it out. Then I'd go up to ATF+4.

I agree with you on changing the fluid after driving a bit. It's quite possible he'll loosen up some of the gunk in it just by driving some.

Well I'm a little more confused than I was earlier - simply because I don't know exactly which tranny I've got. I am presuming it's the 4x446RH w/transfer case - but that's only because I don't know what an A518 is, nor do I know how to positively identify. If anyone would like to coach me on that - I'm all ears!

Here's my Autozone shopping list:
[ol][*]Felpro BS40181 -5.2L Rear main seal (engine)[*]Timken 8609- Selector shaft seal 4 spd auto tranny[*]Timken KWK99187 - Front pump seal kwik kit[*]Timken 710058 - Rear seal 4spd auto trans[*]Az Filters TF127 - filter & seal kit for pan[*]Anchor 2852 - trans mount[/ol]
So again all help is appreciated on the positive ID so I'm not creating new and horrible problems by trying to use the wrong seals & stuff.

95 = 46RH
96= 46RE
......
what are you doing about the wiring?
Are you going to run toggle switches for OD and lockup? lol

RE has more wiring and computer control....
the Governor in the RE is electronic and uses an output speed sensor...
and the RH has the governor mounted around the output shaft... uses Hydraulic pressure...

are you JUST swapping internal parts?
or replacing entire trans?

just internals = OKAY
(input clutches, overrunning clutches, retainers, ETC)

Uh oh.[:@]

So it's entirely possible the 2nd tranny I've bought for this project (oh yeah - 1st one was 2wd, purchase sight unseen and now sitting useless - because I'm an idiot); that this 2nd tranny could in fact be an incorrect application due to electronics change?

It's worth noting from my limited understanding point of view - that the truck from whence tranny #2 came had an identical dash-mounted OD switch and toggling it at the low speeds during the test did indeed yield a noted gear change. Since I couldn't park parts-truck next to broken truck, I could not do a connector-by-connector comparo; so I guess it means I'm taking the full-monty gamble.[]

Wowbe the wrong unit againwould entirely bum me out, and probably put me at the end of the line for investing in this vehicle much more. Well if it came down to it - yes indeed I would use a toggle to trigger something to get around the issue.

Gawd I hope this works without having to serious bodge it.

Good news. Just heard from the mechanic, new trans is in and tested OK. So it looks as though I've Dodged a bullet (pun intended). Now if the Mopar Gods will smile upon me anyway (see previous pun) then perhaps the tranny will actually last a few miles as well.

Anyone need a '96 2wd Tranny - I seem to have a spare that's got minimal miles since it's un-documented rebuild. Location is Houston, TX. $350 - come and git it!

Wondering if I should keep the old 4x4 tranny and attempt to dive in to do a rebuild myself now that it's "extra". Thoughts from the group at large? Trannies are the only thing I've never gotten into the guts on...

Drove the re-trans'd truck home last night. $740 was the total charge for the tranny, swap+filter change+rear trans case seal+R&R rear Ujoint+front pump seal+front end allignment.

Not bad on the whole. Tranny shifts forward gears very smooth and the truck seems to have more power (eg: less slippage?) when accelerating. The replacement tranny isn't perfect as there's a noticeable lag, then an accompanying "thunk" when selecting Reverse after having parked. Presuming it's a torque convertor filling issue, since the problem doesn't exist after having driven the truck for a while & it's warmed up.

Two questions for the group at large:
1. Anyone have a use for the 4x4 tranny I pulled that's got a working 1, 2 and R gears but 3rd/4th is gone? Transfer case still attached...
2. Anyone need a 2wd tranny that I also happen to have now? I hate to let it rot in the bed of the truck...

Both items are located in Houston, TX ...
