Rear Differential...CASE CLOSED=)
Yeah, very ballsy, it's what made it so damn awkward. Tomorrow my buddy is coming over tomrorow to help me take the parts out of the rear diff. Then he's going to make a final check to see if it's reusable and then we will go from there. Guy on pavementsucks is selling me open carrier and spider gears for $55 shipped, so I'm very pleased with that.
Tomorrow when you take that thing apart, don't forget to take some pictures of that housing that's gonna bind up on you going down the highway. I wouldn't want to see anybody doing that. So, even though I don't buy the stuff that that tech told you 100%, I would still like to see some more detailed pictures. Hook it up...
I've heard of employees doing that, only to take it back to the shop and actually do the work there. The boss tells them to do that usually as a last resort, make you think you are getting a good deal, when you are actually getting hosed still.
"Well, since the boss is gone, have I got a deal for you..."
I usually only see it at car dealerships with sales, but it wouldn't surprise me if others have adapted it to their needs.
No way to tell for sure from my end, but if it doesn't feel right, don't do it.

Lol yeah he may or may not be legit. I know the guy I used to work with did stuff out of his house outside of the shop for half the shop rate. Or almost half slightly over half. I don't know that he did a ton of work out of his house and I never heard him try to take any customers away from the shop and he in most cases sent them there. Like he had his own dad come through the shop. I only know of a few guys who were his buddies he did work for out of his house and for big jobs he sent them to the shop still.
As for that guy he may be like this who just makes more money on the side or it may be one of those scams like said above. Hard to tell. Overall this highly recommended shop of yours sounds like another place I'd stay away from. How in the world do you have this hard of time finding a good shop. Are there no good ones there?

And this is where not going to school hurts mechanics, they missed out on the lesson on how to attract repeat customers. You just get these bozos who want to hit the jackpot. Honestly, if a mechanic cut some corners for me and gave me consistent good prices, we'd be back there all the time. But nope, they give you a couple good prices, and then they WHACK you, so I'm just whacking them back and getting my damn truck outa there, fuc* 'em. I'm excited to work on the truck anyways, it's going to be fun. I'm going to buy an assload of my favorite cigars, and make it a fun project. I mean, I understand why mechanics jack **** up, because they are trying to make a living, so sure whack the customer that doesn't come often. But the repeat customers, you'd be much better off not pissing them off with absurd bills, but I guess it's another shop to learn the hard way. Besides, I've had my fair share of learning it the hard way, amen.
