Default RE: Rear Diff.

hey 01360, guess what. I don't have nothing to do right now except wait for a telephone call so I'm going to go work on my truck. I don't know exactly how I'm going to do it or put it all back together but I'm going to go pull my intake manifold and have some fun with my keggar. I've never done this before but I got the tools so I'm gonna go act a fool. Try it sometime, you'll learn something, get a sore back and knees, and figure out that one of the best ways to fix a car is to just get off your booty and do it. I'm not doing the hughes plenum thing but I am going the $20 dollar route to fix my plenum. Reason being is that I plan on personally doing a valve job on my heads and I'm eventually gonna get a better intake manifold for my truck. I got a 4 barrel carb and intake manifold sitting behind the house on my dads High Output 79 1 ton Dodge Van... That's going to be a fun experiment.

Ok fellas, my buddies came over and helped me take out everything in the rear. diff. He thinks she's good to go, but I wanted to take some pictures before I started buying anything. So I took pix of the ring and pinion gears, the housing etc. Let me know if you think it's ok to put the parts back into it. If it's a green light, I am buying the open carrier and spider gears from the guy on pavementsucks.com. And I'll buy the bearings and seal kit and diff. cover gasket. Even had time to dick off and put my 35" tires up against my bros f-350. Man he's hooked now lol, he wants them bad!

This is a link to my picturtrail of the gallery. Hope you guys can see all the pix.

I'd post that over an PS too just to get their opinion. BTW for the rear diff cover I'd get a tube of The Right Stuff or black RTV. I like The Right Stuff personally and make your own gasket. Thats the only way I've ever seen it done. Can you even buy premade gaskets?

Here is a how to

BTW where is that chipped? Maybe I'm looking in the wrong places but I don't see any chips.

Exactly,I don't even see any chips. Unless there is something drastically removed, it looks perfect. What the hell were they talking about OH THE HOUSING IS DESTROYED.

I just called him, he said he will bring jack stands over tomorrow morning, so that covers that. And thank you. So does the housing look good to you guys for me to put the parts back into? If so, I want to go and buy that open carrier .

Looks like your good to go.
Get a couple of cans of brake clean and go to town in there. It looks like the old oil was in there for quite a while.

Personally I would be all over the free Trac-Lok from Slomojo.

Good luck

I don't see any chips or anything. You sure you weren't just getting ripped off 100% by the shop? Now don't take my word as if something happens I'm not responsible I'm just saying I don't see anything in those pictures.

I agree though always use jackstands when under a vehicle. You can buy a set fairly cheap at Wal-Mart or Sears. I'd invest in a good floor jack and jack stands. Then maybe a mini floor jack type jack for your truck to replace that crappy bottle jack. I did and love it.
