Do you have rear disks now? This might be a good time to find one with those and do a swap.

Since his truck is an '01, he might alrady have rear disks, but if not, I think he'd be better off keeping this as simple as possible.

On second thought I think you are probably right and keeping this as simple as possible is probably the best thing. Well, second best I still say a for sale sign is the best but he doesn't want to do that so minus well go with the 2nd best.

I have a late series 01 and mine came from the factory withdrums in the back.

If it were my truck, i'd have a hard time justifying selling it after taking out a $4000 loan for that tranmission. If it weren't for that, i'd definetly agree to sell it.
On second thought, he's about out of major things that could go wrong with this truck, so soon it will be like he has a new truck. Only things left that could give him a headache like this would be if the front axle/diff started acting up, or if his motor let go.

Then he has the motor and front axle like you said. Hopefully nothing will go wrong with those but what if he starts having a problem and has one of the famous cracked heads? There is another $1000 easy.
He has a messed up wheel which he has been saying so there is the price of that.
There is the price of a proper lift since he doesn't want to put it back down to stock. This in addition to any front end parts that become worn out from the crappy setup he has now.
All in all while not major there are still quite a few things that can and probably will go wrong that are going to cost on up there.
Then you weigh in the fact that everything he tells us on here that he wants to do with it or likes to do with the truck is stuff the truck doesn't do well at all. If he really wants to race and treat stuff like that he would be 100x better off with a Honda and they will hold up 2 times as well plus be fairly cheap to modify.
At the end of the day he is going to have a ton of money in this truck and he is still going to have a 7-8 year old truck that has 100k some miles on it. He isn't going to get out of it what he is putting into it now so I think he should get out of it what he can before he puts to much more money into it.
I honestly this last round of repairs and a few other goodies but mostly repairs I have around 8 grand or so into it. Thats a lot for a truck this old.
Then he still wants new tires which are another $1000 or so.
