RE: time for a tuneup but i cant find it!!!
I average 10,000 miles per year, but over half of those are pulling, hauling, or 4X4'ing it. Pretty rough usage and I always replace my cap and rotor annually even though I could probably go longer. It gives me a good reason to play under the hood each spring. Another thing I do is apply some di-electric grease to each of the contact points inside the cap along with the rotor/cap/coil contactwhen I install it. Maybe this is why I don't see the burn through (expanded gap) as much as you do. When I replace the cap I do still find some of that grease still attached to eachof thesepoints.

For the cost of a new NAPA brass contact cap and rotor it's an easy expense to accept. When I am replacing them I also regap my plugs or replace them if needed. It gives me the chance to tell the wife about anything else I need. Good opportunity to add to the truck every spring.

keep in mind that we're (were) running msd spark boxes which eat up cap & rotors...

Don't forget about the MSD's appetite for spark plugs also.
