Cat broke apart in 9 months...
Anybody had a Magnaflow cat break down in under a year?
I took my truck to a shop and had them scan it for a cylinder 8 misfire code I had been intermittantly getting and couldn't track down. They didn't find anything wrong with it initially, and the guy there was a little stumped. I mentioned to him that a lot of guys here on the forum had problems with the stock cat plugging and causing that code, which is why I had mine pulled and swapped for a magnaflow last summer. So the guy puts it on the rack for S&G and starts slapping the exhaust pipes from the muffler forward and low and behold, rattle.
I take the truck to the exhaust shop as the cat's still got lots of warranty left and tell the guy about it. The guy looks at me like I'm nuts, but I go to him for everything exhaust and he humors me and puts it on the rack. Rattle, Rattle. "Hmmm, well, it might be the heat shield loose on top," he says. So he feels around on the heat shield and bangs on it from underneath and can't get the rattle to stop. He agrees to cut it off and examine the cat. Sure enough, it's "full of pennies." The engine end of cat was spotted like a wet screen. The outer housing on the front and back sides turned colors due to the heat, but a band in the middle was as new and unchanged as a brand new converter. The guy shined a flashlight thru the cat and I could see "chunks" of debris in between the two honeycombs.
I got a new cat out of it, but I'm curious if anybody else has had this problem, as I hope this is an isolated case an not something I'm going to have to keep worrying about.

That sucks. I have kind of been wanting to get one of these cats but I'm not so sure now. I'm starting to think for the most part OEM stuff is best unless it's one of the few things that have issues like the pleneum gasket and transmission. The OEM cats don't seem to have the best rep either though so idk.
Either you got a bad cat or your harder on them than me
Ive never got 3yrs out of any cat in my 96. Magnaflows I get just over 2yrs before they start to rattle.

I just put a Manaflow on, hope it makes it for at least 4 more years. My OE made it 13 years.

Mine lasted only about a year and a half, then it just broke apart. I'm on my second one right now, (have about 7 months on it so far). I went with it again because I got this second one for free from Magnaflow since the first one went out so quickly.
I was running two on my old blazer (true duals with x pipe config) ... I got about 8 months out of em if I was lucky. I ended up switching to a no-name high performance cats it was a little cheaper and they ran 13 months no problem
