Well, I have a 96 as well, and I cut the muffler off, and bolted in a straight pipe too. I thought it was gonna be loud as well, which s what I was going for, but I forgot about the resonator in the tail pipe. If you don't remove that too, then it will not be loud at all. It will only have a little ncer rumble to it, but it will not be loud.

I agree with Cereal Killer...I justsnapped 2 hacksaw blades and 2 fibergalss Dremel cutting wheels getting mine off. Then had to cut 2 of the 4 the rubber exhaust holders off too.

So his question wasn't really answered 100%. If he cuts off the muffler and goes straight pipe to replace it, will it be too loud or would it be ok and sound decent. How many have actually went this route and NOT put a muffler back in it's spot?

Us curious minds want to know. Heck, I have even thought about doing this as a piece of straight pipe is cheaper than an expensive muffler.

When I was a mechanic at a used car lot in Baraboo, WI we use to put a "Y" pipe right behind the cat, and then run dual straight pipes all the way to the back and that was it. I have never done it with just the one single pipe before so I have no idea of what it would sound like. I don't want to cut mine as well as the original poster here until we have someone that's running their exhaust this way first that can really tell what it sounds like first.

I just had mine straight pipe right after the cat that that literally exitted right under the cab for about 2 weeks. It was loud but you shouldn't have any problems with it being too loud orthe check engine light if you aren't messing with the O2 sensors and you allow the rest of the pipe to exit in the stock location. It'll just be deep and a pretty good rumble, with a little extra when you get on it. I'd say cut the muffler off and just get a new pipe welded up.
