K&N Filter
Nice sounds like you are going about this the right way. Was he cool with the only paying $100-150? Is your other buddy coming back over to help again? Sounds like a good plan.
Did you get your transfer case fluid changed? It wasn't hard either was it? You glad you are learning to do this stuff yourself? Did you use the Mopar ATF+4 fluid in the transfer case or did you try another type?
As for the filter I'd spend the $10 on a recharger kit even if you don't need to clean this filter. The reason being is it's nice to have. I guess I really like it since I had 3 K&N filters. I had one on the bike, one on the 96 Accord, and one on the 06 Accord so it's nice to clean those filters. This last time I took the K&N off the bike to clean I noticed it had a hole in it so I replaced it and went with a different brand as I've read nothing but how K&N's are bad for dirt only bikes as they let dirt through. I've read that you should only run them on the bikes that only see street use. Thats why I didn't get another one for my bike.
If it's just dirty you can clean it up and have it like new. No reason to replace it. Inspect it carefully though and make sure it doesn't have any holes or the wire isn't messed up on it or anything. If it has any holes it needs to be replaced.

As for the transfer case, I did just what you told me. Went to Walmart and bought 3 quarts of ATF+4. I used a hand syphon that I had to get the oil into the transfer case due to the lack of space. Went in nice and smooth. So transfer case is all set to go now. Then for the engine, I bought 6 quarts of Mobil 1 and a Napa Gold oil filter. So the engine is good to go now. And then the front differential is all set as well. It was all cleaned up and has Mobil 1 Gear Oil in it. So I feel good that all the basic fluids have been changed, and it was really fun to do, not to mention, saved me a couple hundred of dollars.
Yeah, he seemed to be cool with it. I suspect he'll make more doing it off to the side anyways than if I had it done at the shop, so I'm sure he will be very cool with it. I just needed to make sure it was done right. My friend came over and took it all out for me which was a huge help. I was able to see the housing, and get it all cleaned up in there. Was also able to inspect all of the parts, so he was a huge help as well coming over and taking everything apart for me, and making the job that much easier for the mechanic. Now everything will ready to go for the mechanic, and hopefully just pop everything in and get this truck back on the road. I know I'll be doing a lot of driving though lol. My poor brother has been having to take on all of the burden of driving his truck, so he expects me to be doing a lot of the driving the next 2-3 weeks.
Nice sounds good. Yeah those filters are made to be cleaned over and over. I wouldn't replace it until it gets damaged. They have a million mile warranty after all.
Yeah sounds like you've got good fliuds in there and are all set. You seem to be like me and like synthetic in everything. It bothers me I can't run it in the rear diff. I know i'm weird but I'd rather have Royal Purple in there. Oh well, I guess if the Auburn works better without it I don't want to use it.
Cool. Yeah I've heard of mechanics doing stuff like this. I mean you think about it they make what $15 an hour at the shop thats charging $60 an hour. They can come to your house and do it for $30 an hour which is half price for them but double the price for them so you both win. Now these prices are just an example but it seems to be how it works. A guy I used to work with did this although I never saw him tell people at the shop he'd do it on the side other than me. He helped put my dash in super cheap at his house. Major stuff he told people to go to the shop. Even some simple stuff he sent to the shop. Like his dad needed brakes and he sent him to the shop. Overall I think he only did stuff for a few guys at his house as most of the time he seemed to send people to the shop we worked at. Neither of use work there anymore so I don't know if he is still doing stuff at his house or not.
