Default Mobil 1 gear oil for manual trans?

Most of you have AT's, so that's what ends up coming up in searches like crazy. From the few posts I have found, people have suggested just using the Mopar Manual Transmission Fluid at the $15 a quart. I'm wanting to change mine out, but I don't have dealers close to me (closest one is about 85 miles away).

Checking around, it looks like the Mobil 1 gear oil (75w-90) meets the same specs, but no one seems to be able to verify why Dodge says "Mopar Fluid ONLY." The Chev's with the same NV3500 have the Mobil 1 stuff listed as a suitable replacement, so what is different about the Dodge? Is it just a gimmick, or should I spend all the money to travel 170 miles round trip and then spend $15 a quart to get this stuff?

I have a 5 speed but ive always used the Mopar stuff, I would imagine that if the Mobil meets the same specifics it would be ok but I dont know for sure.... Sorry I couldnt help more.

Should be fine. Worst case you'll get notchy shifting.
I'm pretty sure the NV3500 in the GM is the same trans. If they say it's OK I'd roll with it. Is it much cheaper than the Mopar stuff?

Yeah, it's $8 a quart as opposed the the $15. The big problem is that I just don't have a dealer nearby, so then you add the cost of gas and I'm looking at about $30 a quart!

I'd say go for it. It meets the requirements so just do it.

This is the tricky part...Chevy says it meets requirments for the NV3500, Dodge says nothing about it...Is there anything different between the two? It's really not all about the $$ savings, it's that I don't want to blow up a tranny either.

check your state laws; you may find that Dodge must provide the fluid for free since it is labeled "Mopar Fluid Only". If this is the case, have them mail it to you and then DYI. Good luck.

Really? Where would I go about finding something like this?

Pipe dream!

Buy the mobil 1 stuff.
Even if you filled it with straight 90 wt gear oil it wouldn't "blow up"
