Default 1998 Ram Front Passenger Speaker

Hi,

I'm pretty new to this forum but it's absolutely great. 1998 club cab. Passenger door speaker went out (intermittent). I want to take off the panel and replace it if necessary, but it is intermittent. So I think it may just be a failing connection.

But the rub is that I also have the tweeter in the window post. So I don't know if that's the prob, or the door.

Has anyone had this happen? Any tips appreciated.

Thanks,
Matt

My passenger speaker was blown, so I replaced the front speakers with a pair of Pioneer 6x9's, but I'm still having trouble getting it right.

Took off the panel. It's one of those Infinity jobs with the "integrated amplifier". Thanks Dodge. Great idea. The speaker coil is open and definitely has to be replaced. But now I have to either get a replacement speaker with a mount for that damn external amp or I have to replace that whole unit. I bet the price at the stealership will make a full replacement sound good.

Anyone successfully replace one of these speaks? It's a front 6x9 door speaker/amp from the "premium" 6 speaker system.

my passenger side tweeter has never worked. I have picked up replacements and will attempt to remedy the situation this weekend. My concerns are getting into that pillar cover and the new speakers each come with an amp. Don't know exactly where I will place the amp.

I had to end up bypassing the Infinity amp by putting a T with a few wires, and then I just drilled two holes in the back of the 6x9 (on the plastic back piece) and screwed the amp on the back so it didn't flop around.

I used zip ties to secure the amps myself.

just replace the speakers to be honest with you, those infinity systems with the dodges only last with true quality for about 6 years of regular use with no high volume output. And when you do replace them dont go for 6X9's as they tend to distort easier due to the unbalanced design of an oval speaker in comparison with a round speaker, hence the reason why no high end speaker companies make a 6X9, such as focal, mb quart, and boston. So when offered the pioneer 6X9's or the infinity reference 6X9's at whatever stereo store you go to ask them for the conversion kit to the 6.5" speakers and get whatever they offer you in 6.5" instead. you wont get as much bass out of it, but they are speakers and are not meant to put out bass, only highs and mids.

be sure to check the wires in the plastic conduit where they bend each time the door is opened or shut

archived posts that might be of help:

I just replaced my factory Ram door speakers with some Inifinity Reference 612i
and the difference is killer. I have the fact head unit with the AM/FM CD Cass
and factory Infinity speakers w/ seperate tweeters. They were only $73.90
from Crutchfield with everything needed to to the change out and
instructions. What a difference, the cheapest stereo upgrade with the
biggest improvement. Thought someone might find this interesting.

For front speakers I would either get component speakers from either MB
Quartz or Boston Acoustics. These are two companies that make nothing but
speakers, speakers, and more speakers. They are the best in car audio, and
with the best from either company you are not going to be disappointed.

I went with Boston Acoustics Pro's 6.5's for my fronts, but I'm sure I would
have been equally as happy with MB Quartz. The BA Pro 6.5 3-ways are
awesome, if you can get them mounted. My rears are Boston Acoustics RM6's,
which I believe are the best coax speakers on the planet, and as such are a
great value.

This is from a 1995 Field Service Manual for the Ram, pages 8F-4, 8W-80-35,
and 8W-80-36.

Wires are labelled like this:

X12 20 RD/WT

means

Circuit wire labelled M1 is a 20 gauge sized wire with main color Red with a
White tracer stripe

========================
Left (Grey) Radio Connector named C229

put centered location tab on top - this puts number 1 pin on the far left and
number 7 on far right ( but some confusion here, see note below)

1. Fused Battery + Feed (Clock Memory) M1 20 Pink

2. Fused Ign Switch output (Run/Start) X12 18 Red with white tracer stripe

3. Fused headlight and panel lights switch output E2 22 Orange

4. On Sense from Park lamp switch output L7 20 Black with yellow tracer stripe

5. Right front door speaker Return B(-) X56 20 Dark Blue with red tracer
stripe.

6. Left front door speaker Return B(-) X55 20 Brown with red tracer stripe

7. Radio Mute - no info given

=========================
Right (Black) Radio Connector named C230

1. Right rear speaker return (-) X58 20 Dark Blue with orange tracer stripe

2. Left rear speaker return (-) X57 20 Brown with light blue tracer stripe

3. Right front door speaker (+) X54 20 Violet

4. Left front door speaker (+) X53 20 Dark Green

5. Right rear speaker (+) X52 20 Dark Blue with white tracer stripe

6. Left rear speaker (+) X51 20 Brown with yellow tracer stripe

7. Radio 12 volt output X60 22 Dark Green with red tracer stripe.

Note:
Confusion about pin numbering.
Note that on page 8F-4 the centering location tab is placed up and pin numbers
are 1 on left and 7 on right.

On the connector pin-out diagrams on pages 8W-80 35/36 the opposite way is
given with the centering tab down. Despite this, the descriptions of pin
circuits match.

I just ordered a set of Kenwood 6/12" component speakers to replace front door 6x9's & tweeters to play through my New Kenwood head unit. My '98 Ram door harness has those 6 "confusing" wires. My question is, which wires connect to the New Speakers, & do I have to run "new" wires for the new tweeters or can I use the 2 existing wires in the pillar??? ***Note I'm keeping the original stock rear speakers untill they blow-up
