There is NO speed sensor on the tranny, only the sensor is on the rear axle. Odds are it's not bad unless you have the abs and brake lights on and your speedo is acting strange. I say look at the TV cable, make sure it's not broke at either end. And you can try adjusting it if it's not broke. Have you checked to see if you have any codes? Ya that was replaced 7 months ago. What I meant was the sensor that the transmission has. i believe it is called the output shaft speed sensor located on the driver side of the tranny.

 

98's and up are not suppose to have one on the tranny. So I don't know what the deal is.

 

okay / changed the sensor on the transmission.Now the speedometer starts working when you get to about 30 mph,below that speed it doesn't work. Now, how do you fix that?

 

The sensor on top of the rear axle housing most likely. Is your ABS and Brake light on too,by any chance?

 

Yes , I've replaced both sensors/differental & transmission.It just started working. Thanks to all, the information made everything start working again.

 

Did replacing the sensor on the tranny fix the shifting problem?

 

I am having the same problem. It starts up and shifts into gear and reverse normally my speedo works fine i have no lights on like the check engine or anything but it wont shift into 2nd gear or more unless i let it go down by itself then it will kick into 2nd or sometimes when i rev it 3k+ rpms almost 4 it will shift into 2nd then rarely 3rd. I changed the from speed sensor located on the transmission and it didnt really make any difference ..any suggestions on what it could be?

Well, I have a 1995 RAM 2500 8.0L (V10) and swear to God that I can't find a differential speed sensor to save my life...well at least my brother-in-law's life (as he's the one looking). We've found the transmission one but can't find the back one.

The symptoms I have is that I have no speedometer activity (none, stays at zero and the trip and odometer don't move) and the truck isn't shifting at highway speed (about 50-70 mph).

From the picture I saw on here, it looks like the sensor should be on the rear differential on the passenger side / rear, right? Is there a chance that it isn't located there? I have the Haynes manual and can't find any reference to any speed sensors other than the ABS (think there are two of those best I can tell by description) and the transmission speed sensor. I DO NOT have any ABS lights on or anything (could mean I don't have ABS...I just bought the truck 2 days ago, so not intimately familiar with it yet).

 

On the 95, the speed sensor for the speedo is on the output shaft of the trans, or T/Case. If you have RWAL, there should also be a sensor on top of the rear differential. Should be obvious..... follow the wires. If there are no wires..... you won't find the sensor either.
