I don't know if there is a clip or not. I know the 1500 with the Dana 40 axle dosn't have a clip. As far as where to use the puller I'mnot sure how you could. One way to make sure that you don't mess up the bolt is to put the socket that fits it over it first and then put the chunk of metal behind it. Don't worry about the threads or the bolt snapping. You need worry about messing up the head.

 

next time I pull my hub assembly, I will take pictures and show you what i mean, kinda hard to describe
