Default rear axle seed sensor??? ABS and Brake light

Hello,

When I started my 99 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 136k miles this morning, the ABS and brake light stayed lit. Two years ago I had a similar situation and thanks to the suggestions on this forum I replaced the rear axle speed sensor and the problem went away. This time the problem is a little different. The speedometer works as it should and once I get up to about 25 MPH the brake light will turn off. Once the brake light is off the ABS light will turn off. Then when I slow down they will come back on together. Speed up they turn off. The brake light always turns off first, then the ABS light turns off. The brakes feel fine at the pedal. I checked the brake fluid and it was between the “Add” and “Full” marks. I added brake fluid and the problem still occurs.

I am not sure if this is related, but I have been hearing some squealing sounds from the front end. I thought it was the brakes, but I pulled the wheels and they looked fine. I am wondering if my wheel bearings or something else is worn out, but the sound is intermittent at best.

THANKS in advance for any suggestions.

Hello

I have been driving the truck a little more. Sometimes that ABS and brake lights come on at startup and sometimes they dont. Sometimes the flash and go off, and sometimes they stay on. I can not find any pattern.

Anyone have any ideas?

THANKS

Put a scanner on it when the light is on. The scanner will also show saved codes

Hello,

THANKS for the suggestions. I hope this is not a stupid question, but what is the VSS plug? Autozone and Advance auto say they can not scan the ABS or brake light. They say they can only scan the check engine light. Will I have to take it to the dealer to have the ABS light scanned?

THANKS

I think I found my problem..... I ran an errand last weekend and about a mile from home the front right wheel started making a grinding noise. When I got home the wheel was hot. I jacked up the front and it looks like the wheel bearing is shot.....

That will do it.

And BTW the VSS is the vehicle speed sensor, which is the one you said you replaced.
