Doing away with the 46RE
Well, the P1740 code popped up again on me for the second time in less then 2 years. Last time it cost my almost 2 grand. So, I got to thinking about how hard it would be to swap out the 46RE for a manual or 727 transmission.
Has anyone done this before? I would be looking at using a donar trucks to make the interchange as painless as possible.

it is definetly possible, try searching some of the sport trucks, as the 1996 1500 sport that I just picked up has the 727 in it, not sure if original but try anyway.Any questions you have about a swap let me know and I can get the answers if I don't have them. Hope I can help.

both have been done. SEARCH

The point of the post was to get some feedback and information.
im telling you to search, to find people who have done it. I thought about going to a 5 speed when my tranny went, but it was cheaper to get it rebuilt. Search auto to manual swap. The 727 would be much easier, but since you have a 46re and not 46rh, then you would have to get a custom computer program, and all sorts of stuff.
they make some good nv4500's out there. If your gonna spend 2k anyway might as well. They sell the clutch linkages and all that on the internet. http://www.nv4500.com/
(NV4500 is dodge's manual tranny)

I also kind of wanted to have a manual swapped in whenever my transmission went but I got to researching it before anything happened and it just looked to be too much work and would get expensive since I couldn't do most of it.
I ended up just going with a APS transmission which imo is the best way to go if you get a new one.
