Default Heads?

Hey guys whats going on. I just recently decided to change my water pump due to it being shot and the radiator being shot so i obviously have to replace both the pump and the radiator. My question is that i have a sound in the heater core could that be the head or heads cracked or a head gasket being bad and air getting into my cooling system and if so what are the best heads to go with if i just decide to do the job right the first time and replace them with a nice set of heads all input would be greatly appreciated.

a local automotive machine shop can clean, inspect, and rebuild the heads. make SURE they have the ability to magnaflux then for cracks. look for a place that's been in business for a long time. good machine shops tend to be around a downtown "Main Street"

Magnaflux is a specfic brand of "dye penetration test"

interesting pics.

according to this article, only cast iron heads can be mangnafluxed, not aluminum. i think they are referring to the specific process of powder/magnet. i think an alternative "dye penetration test" is performed on aluminum, using materials/equipment from the magnaflux company, and its still generally referred to as a magnaflux test.

It's hard to get all the air out of the system. On my 96 starting with a cold engine, I jacked the front up as high as my 3 ton floor jack would go, removed the radiator cap then started it up. Let it warm up until the thermostat opened and squeezed the top hose until no more bubbles would come out. So far no more gurgling from the heater.

Here's a link to some heads I've been looking at, took me forever to find them again, so I bookmarked them again.

just pull the heads and look at the area around the valves. if cracked - they're no good. if not cracked, take them to a good machine shop and have them clean, inspect, magnaflux, and report back to you. this will cost you $x amount of dollars, regardless of whether they are any good or not. they will tell you whether they are worth rebuilding.

just for comparison, here's the set that someone else recently bought. at $500/set, they're a lot cheaper than the hi-performance $1600/set. these are new, not rebuilt.
