Default RPM's drop when ac is on

just started yesterday. i picked my girl up at a friends house and my truck almost didnt start. i usually when i start her i turn the key to accesory to wait for the volt to get to 8 and fuel pump to prime then fire it up. usually no prob it starts right up. this time i did that and it barely turned over like the battery was dead. waited 10 sec tried again same thing. took 5 tries to get it to turn over and barely idle and had to hit the gas to get it to run. let it sit running for a couple min- all is fine- pulled out of the driveway and turned the ac on. now the RPM's are bouncing between 200 to 1200 and gos when gas is on but starts bouncing as soon as i let off. it runs fine- perfect when ac is off just when it is on. i dont know if its my battery ( looks original truck@ 128,000 mi) or is it my alt. please help i hate being stuck at home. also its 109 in phoenix, i need the ac.

Maybe the compressor/clutch bearing is going bad? Or you might try removing and cleaning the IAC .

sounds like the clutch on the compressor, turn the ac on and than look at the compressor pully and see if its spinning freely, I had the clutch go out completly on a 96 and it locked the whole pully up

Windows still roll down dont they?

Update! just drove her around the block for a test drive.started ok- cold start- drove about 5 miles to get engine operating temp. turned ac on - all ok- no rpm bouncing or anything - running like a champ. stoped and let idle with ac on-ok- checked ac clutch- w/ ac off the clutch does not spin. w/ac on clutch spins so i think it is working right. got home and pulled in driveway and turned truck off with the ac off. tried to turn on but it BARELY cranks over. when it does crank i have to hit the gas to keep it alive. it seems to only do this when the engine is warm. i dont think its the ac anymore its got to be something else. maybe IAC- cuz when it gets like this it doesnt want to idle. bad coil? i dont know. ive already did a tune up a month ago- cap-rotor-plugs-wires-180*tstat-oil. PLEASE help.

AS far as not wanting to turn over, and barely starting.I would check the connections at the battery first and the alternator (the IAC will not cause this), it sounds like you have a charging prob. Take the alternator and battery out and bring them to Autozone or wherever and they will check them for free. Do this first, because these trucks need a good charging system and full battery power to run correctly. Then you can diagnose the second prob. If there is one.

now since it has sat for awhile-and hour- it starts fine. but it will not stay running i have to keep the gas on for it to run. this was very intense as i had to put her back in her cage-garage- so i can work on her, and the driveway has a mild grade to it with the gas and brake on at the same time in reverse-not fun!- i thought it might be that but like i said it starts fine when its cooled off. but i will take them to autozone to be sure, anything else you guys mught think it could be? i appreciate the help zman
