Top End Rebuild Update
I went out in the rain and took these pics. I'll take some more and make a vid once I get the headers on.
So far, I'm very satisfied with the mods. Butt dyno says I have a lot of power on tap.

The engine carrier!

The engine carrier!
I ran it in for 15 minutes at varying speeds between 1200 and 2100 rpm. I've already had my foot into it a little, but I'm a little wary to open it up all the way yet. I want to enjoy driving it without that idle speed miss that drove me insane before I tempt the gods again. Incidentally, the check engine light is on without any stored codes, but it is still running the monitors so I want to see if it will go off by itself after a few more miles.
I don't know if I'll take it to the strip, but I would like to run it on a dyno once I get all the mods installed. Curious to know how much power I'm actually making. I would be shocked if I didn't make at least a modest gain over the advertised factory HP rating.
I got the air cleaner from Summit. When I saw it on Silver's truck, I just had to have it!
With the stock exhaust, I don't hear any noticeable cam "lope", but it seems to have a more powerful sound if that makes any sense. I'm going to run it by the exhaust place and see if they will put on the new cat and muffler the way I want, then maybe this weekend, put on the headers.

Glad one of us is done lol. Whats the specs on your heads and cam? I take it you ended up using stock pushrods? I'm starting to feel that i should replace mine for added insurance.
I still need to PM you and talk about the tool

Here's what I bought:
Heads: http://www.hughesengines.com/partDet...900&eTypeID=10
Spring Kit: http://www.hughesengines.com/partDet...056&eTypeID=10
Cam: http://www.hughesengines.com/partDet...056&eTypeID=10
Timing Set: http://www.hughesengines.com/partDet...895&eTypeID=10
I also bought the belly-pan, gaskets, bolts, etc. I needed from Hughes.
Yes, I reused my stock valvetrain. I even cleaned up and reused my hydraulic lifters. However, mine was a special case because the previous owner had changed the oil religiously every 3,000 miles and many of the internal engine parts were almost new and very clean. If your engine has been beat on, high mileage, sludged up, or the maintenance history is unknown, I would get a new set of lifters, preferably the Sealed Power brand on Summit. I think spending money for hardened/HD pushrods is overkill for our applications. FWIW, I used to work for a mechanic that raced a successful Super Modified with 427 Chevy race prepared engines, and he ran with stock pushrods and stamped rockers without any problems. He even ran the original canister oil filter because he was afraid that a spin-on would get knocked off! So he had a mindset for heavy duty parts that would survive in a high compression, high rpm race engine.

hmm your cam is a little different then the one I'm getting, The heads are basically the same. Reading the service manual has me scared again on taking the timing chain and sprockets and cover off. Were they hard to remove? What size is the bolt that holds the crank pulley and balancer on? Did you use some special cam install tool? It has some special tool listed in the manual
