Lower gears
I am looking into putting 4.56 Yukon gears front and rear in my 97 1500 due to the 33's and the 3.50 gears are way to high and the 318 just don't have to shift in its pants to turn them in the mud unless in low side. My qeuston is I want my RPM to be around 2250-2400@70mph am I their with these gears and is this a weak gear set? I mean will they handle some off road and pulling?

Use this calculator to figure were you want to be. 4.56 might be high to be cruising 70-80 mph to some people. If your staying off road, well then go big.
Hope the calculator helps.

Stay away from the jap crap! Spend the money and run Dana Spicer, Richmond or Precision. Yukon and Genuine are what you pay for....cheap. Go ahead and throw in some Chromoly axle shafts while your in there, well worth the security.

You definatly will need the bigger carrier past 4.11's. I would recomend a detroit full soft locker, it works great with 35's. I highly recomend you do as much research before buying ANYTHING. Ask around and don't cut yourself short on parts. You do not want your gears, carrier, axels, or bearings breaking on the trail, trust me. Spend the extra cash and do it once!

That is what I am doing. Trying to get feedback from people and upgrade anything that is weak while i'm there. I had a shop try to talk me into reusing my old bears on the new stuff I told him if it comes out it gets replaced if it comes new it WILL be replaced and I want all the old stuff. As far as axles I am reusing them for what this truck is used for I will never break one. I am changing the gears becuz the truck is so high geared i get better milage out of OD than in. 33's+3.50 gears and i'm tired of only having a defroster due to no vacum cuz the engine is working so hard to keep the truck moving and it shifting in and out of OD at 70mph becuz the rpms are 1400. That and This will wake up this truck to run the way it should, the power is thier just to high geared to feel it.
