the procedure w/pics is in the haynes manual and the service manual.
it goes something like this.
put rear end up on jack stands.
remove tires/wheels.
remove cover and drain oil.
rotate carrier around until the pinion shaft lock bolt is accessible.
remove pinion shaft lock bolt. one bolt about 8-10mm
slide pinion shaft out. spider gears in top/bottom are now unsupported, so don't rotate the wheels.
slide axle in. pluck c-clip off the end of the axle.
slide axle all the way out.

8-12-14 yes, with pictures at the top. good luck, its not hard. when you put it back together put a little threadlocker on the pinion lock bolt.

After you remove all the springs and the pin going through the back plate and the shoe is free, just twist it and the cable will come off. This is also in the Haynes manual. And also only do one side at a time, this way you can look at the other side to see how too put it back together.

The first problem is you don't want to remove the pinion nut! Do you mean you took out the drive shaft to remove that nut?

i was wondering after reading this you shouldn't be messing with the pinion nut to remove the axel shaft all you need to do is remove the spider gear slide pin and slide pin bolt push in on the axel knock the c-clip off and pull out the axel

i was reading right from the haynes manual when i was writing in the last post. i loosened the slide pin bolt (pinion shaft as haynes calls it) and pushed on the slide pin and it didnt move at all for me. is there a trick to get it out?
