While not the best power programmer on the market, a decent one with the ability to re-calibrate tire size is Hypertech. The speedo recalibration was the main reason I bought mine and I have been happy with it.

If you're looking to seriously mod your engine and get the most out of those mods, Hypertech would not be the way to go.

If you do decide on the Hypertech route, don't buy a new one, they are too expensive for what you get IMHO. You can find a used one for around 150 pretty easily.

The SCT tuner will run circles around a Hypertech, hands down.

A custom tune is the best, and will beat a generic tune any day.

Exactly. I paid $160 for mine shipped used. I was happy with it as it adjusted the speedo and might have helped slightly but not much of a noticable difference to me. If I wanted power I'd go with the SCT or a B&G flash if I just wanted to adjust the speedo I'd go with the Hypertech as the other two listed don't adjust the speedo. I think mine was well worth $160 but not worth the $300 or $400 or whatever they are new.

Thats what I was trying to get at. From what he said his needs were I would recommend one of the hand held programmers, especially at the cost you can get one used. A custom program, IMHO, is the optimal setup but for most peoples' needs is overkill.

I want a custom reflash, but plan to mod the engine later with a cam, throttle body, headers, etc. so I want to wait till then. Right now I want a cheap programmer, cause it's gonna be a few years before I can justify enough wear to rebuild it. Anyone know where to get one cheap?

i had the hypertech max energy and sold it to another forum user ,it cost 350$ new. it was o.k. i think it is more of a mpg tuner. it gave me 2-3 mpg more and something like 20hp. no big gains but you could tell. it made the throttle more responsive too.

i just orderd the superchips 3815. should be here weds or so. i let you know what the butt dyno reads.i sure hope its 46hp like they claim.

You can have the SCT tuner reprogrammed as many times as needed as you change mods. Several of the SCT tuners (the people, not the device) will update the tune for free so long as they do not need to remap fuel tables for you. Then they charge you a little (mine charges $50).

If you are sure there are mods in your future, buying a Superchips or a Hypertech is throwing away money, unless you want speedo/tire calibration.
