Sounds like the converter is taking a dump. It has already spewed liquefied aluminum all the way through the unit. Chances are slim that this will be a cheap fix.

Drop the pan and you will find out very quickly.

I just had this exact same thing happen on a Ford truck im working on. Sometimes it would move forward then it wouldnt, it would get reverse but whine and whine and whine. Pulled the unit and found that the converter laid down on it.

Yeah you will be looking for little shavings or bits of metal in the pan. If you need a new tranny or a rebuild I would suggest putting an aftermarket tranny cooler on. They aren't real pricey, but will help that tranny last longer.

NO, if the converter is bad you wont find any shavings or chunks. Just liquefied aluminum. The fluid will have a silvery gray look to it, almost purple. The bottom of the pan will look like gray metal.

Well youve got debris through out the entire unit, in every passage, clutch pack, and in the valve body.

You might get by with a new TQ but its a gamble.

Clean the pan out, put a new filter on and see what happens. Could be a clogged filter, which would indicate other problems.

How does the pan magnet look?
