Default How to install transmission temp gauge?

I've been thinking I want to install a transmission temp gauge. I'm thinking Autometer as I like their gauges. Anyway, how do I install it in the transmission? Do I drill a hole into the pan like I did when I installed a drain plug or do I put it in somewhere else or what? I know how to wire up the gauge for the lights but just not sure how it connects to the transmission. Is this something that can be a diy without me running a risk of damaging the transmission or is it something that would be worth paying a shop to do? I'd rather do it myself but don't want to risk ruining my transmission.

You can use the front servo port to get the temp reading plus autometer will come with the hardware to install in the servo port If you have downloaded the (merry christmas ) PDF scroll the trans section and it will give the servo ports , Easy DIY....

Thanks. Do I need to drain the fluid to do this or does it just screw in? Do I pull the pan to get to the servo port? I'd like to order it and install it now but since I just changed the fluid I hate to waste it already. I don't like draining and reusing it. Do I need to drill the servo port or does it just screw in?

Any step by step instructions out there? With pictures would be helpful but I might could figure it out without them. I just don't know what a lot is called or a ton about transmissions when it comes to working on them. I know the basics of what I've dealt with. I don't even know where the front servo port is. That's how bad I am.

For the lights can the switch handle it if I just tap into the wire for the dash lights to have it come on when they do or can it not handle that?

I've posted tons of info on this, including the diagram from the service manual with pics of the front servo port. Just unscrew the plug that is on that port, and insert the temp sending unit. One or two drops might come out in the process, but that's all. Fluid is not flowing if the truck is not running in gear.

Ok, I will have to do a search then. So it sounds like just a few minute job right? Do all autometer gauges have what I meed to install or do I need something special?

Do you happen to still have the pics of the port to put it in and all? The pictures don't display in the old threads I found.

This is the gauge I want. Will it have all I need to install it?

Since the one I ordered is mechanical instead of ones like some of you run which are mechanical do I still want to install it in the front servo port or would that not matter?

I've never run a mechanical sending unit in that port, only an electrical.
