madman i purchased my gears from summit racing , i went with superior on the front d44 and had to change the carrier because the new gears where thinner which changed my center location on the ring gear , pricing was good but give yourself more options check around

did you guys change the gearing yourself..or did you have a shop do it....i was going to try to do it but it looks well intimidating....$1000.00 for a shop to do it...made me think is there website to buy rebuilt rearends...price comparison...the manual i got for the truck does not show how to rebuild or change the gears.....i need pictures...step by step....

Did you read the site I linked? You can't get much more detailed and step by step and it has good pics as well. It shows a D60, but if you have a half ton it will be exactly the same for the front D44 and dang close to exactly the same for a Chrysler rear.

Most who have a Ram with 3.55 diff gears
find that when pulling a trailer
2nd gear is too low to use
at highway speeds.

Even though 65 mph is at 4000 rpm where the engine horsepower peak is,
most don't feel comfortable climbing hills when the engine is roaring near full throttle at this rpm.

However, if you change your diff to 3.21
then 2nd gear becomes a much better gear for
heavy trailer hill pulling
as you can go
65 mph at 3600 rpm
which is a good spot between
the torque peak and the horsepower peak rpms.
If you wish to climb hills at near the ideal
'open throttle' fuel consumption spot of the engine
you can slow down to 55 mph at 3300 rpm.

Most Ram owners with 3.55 diffs find that
the factory advice to turn off overdrive when towing
results in the engine turning too many rpms
on flat or downhill sections for their liking,
and go against advice and switch into
overdrive which drops rpm a full 31%
and where unfortunately the ATF pump inside the trans
can't really move enough fluid for good cooling.

However, with a 3.21 diff
in third gear towing driving on flats and downhills
the engine is turning 10% less rpms for slightly better MPG,
but there is still adequate ATF fluid flow for cooling.

yeah i did read the link and i decided...it went to ammco today..they are going to put the 4.10 in it.....$900.00.....12 mo. warranty...thats what sold me warranty...to much shiming and adjusting..i did not have the tools...let them do it......there was a reply to this post...i think it said to go the other way...3.21...gears....huh....we will see...and thanks for the link....

I would consider putting a LSD in as well. Since you're already paying for the diff setup, you would just be paying the incremental cost of the LSD.

ive been thinkin about gettin detroit tru lock for front and rear on my 99 ram instead of my 3.55 i would get 4.56

it came from the factory with limited slip..according to the build sheet....when i asked about that the guy at ammco says he has seen them go anywhere from 20,000 to 150,000 miles just depends on the servicing of the rear end and how it has been driven...well im forty...im to old to tear it up on purpose...and the people that owned it before us were even older...and they kept all service records....which they kept up on quite nicely...we will see next time i hook up that trailer how much it helped or not...thanks....
