Default Transmission trouble?

Ok guys went for a drive all of a sudden I hear a horrible grinding noise. I stop pull over cant see anything dripping check trans fluid and looks fine, plenty of fluid.Continue on shifts once then twice feels like it wants to shift again then grinding noise again with jerking. So drive home with it in 2nd drove 40 all the way home no problem moment it is shifted to {d} it does it again.Neural reverse 1st and 2nd work. What would this be..torque convertor?
Didnt have time to take the cover off.Any ideas?

I would say it isn't the TC. It has to be something inside the transmission, but I definitely not knowledgeable enough to say exactly what it would be. If it were the TC, I would imagine that you would have problems with all gears and reverse.

Thanks for the reply. It probably wouldn't be a sensor, would it?

Uh. Sensors dont make a grinding noise and the only sensor on the transmission is on the tailshaft housing.

2wd or 4wd?

Just a 2wd. Has around 250k miles on it,so I guess it had a good run.

yeah, id say so. If you want to diagnose it further, jack the rear axle off the ground and support it with jack stands, and chock the front wheels. Have someone get in and start the truck and run it through the gears. Lay down next to the truck or under it (which ever is comfortable for you) and listen to whats going on. You should be able to tell when it shifts gears, and where your noise is coming from.

Had the tow truck pick it up tuesday afternoon, guy got on it wednesday and finished it the same day. Called me this morning with the total. It was $1505.70 complete rebuild, new torque convertor, and a transmission cooler. He told me when he opened it up there was nothing but pieces. Strangest thing transmission works great, then the next thing you know time for a rebuild.
