engine compatibility

for future referance. i have not done personally but have seen the prcess, and alot of them, the 5.9 is the SAME MOTOR. just a longer strock and the trasmisions are balanced differantly. although you would have needed a new comp. the intake would bolt up, not to sue about the exhaust a would just buy new headers for that anyway. but yes. the head gasket does fix hydro lock because it just straight opens the motor wide open, releases all water and pressure. as long as you do the oil change at the same time. but good to here it was just a bent rod. i would inspect everything around that as well. make sure nothing else got messed up in the process.

Transmission balanced differently? I thought it was the engine that was balanced differently; the 360 (5.9) is external and the 318 (5.2) internal. Am I mistaken?
There might only be slight differences, but you can't say its the same motor.
Don't forget the differences between OBD I in a 1995 and a OBD II type system from any newer truck. You can't just replace the computer, a lot more wires than that.

well yes, thats my mistake, got flustered, you are correct. the other differnces re the torque converter, passenger side motor mount is differant, oil pan is differant, and i think thats it. other then the obvious longer stroke. and the exaughts will bolt right up although the 360's tubes are about a 1/4 inch bigger for the flow. anything else cuse i am willing to learn here. im not a know it all by anymeans.
and i ment the wiring harness with the computer for the OBD II.

Well, I don't know a whole lot about the topic either, but I do know you need more than just a harness. You'd need to rewire a lot of sensors and those kind of things, I believe, as IIRC OBD II has a lot more sensors.
I guess it doesn't really matter, as he is replacing a rod and hopefully thats all he needs.

definately not is my guess. As mentioned earlier the 318 is internally balanced so the rods all weigh about the same. Also the rod length is probably not the same, but thats not even an issue because of the first part.
