I'm trying Castrol Syntec 5W30. I usually use Mobil 1 but they were out. I'm in Fargo ND, and -20's are not uncommon in January/February.

I ran 5w30 Mobil 1 synthetic last winter. This winter I will be trying 10w30, and have made the switch to Royal Purple. Will see how it goes.

Bought some oil off a friend the other day... 5w30 Quaker State synthetic. I tried talking them into Mobil 1 or RP, but they didn't want to spend the extra $$$. They were going to have me change the oil for them (its a friend of my wife's), but the previous oil change place used an air wrench to put the plug back into her little Hyundai, and I couldn't get it off, even with a bar on the end of my socket wrench. She is somewhat cash strapped, going through a divorce and she is currently stuck with the husband's debt, so I bought the oil off of her. Thought I'd try it out and see if its as bad as they claim.

Running it in my wife's 4.0 Grand Cherokee to see how it does. So far, not impressed at all. Can hear a lot more engine noise (Sounds like a very quick "clack clack clack clack" repeatedly when cold that we never heard with the Mobil 1. Lifter?). Always told Quaker was bad compared to Mobil 1 or RP, will see.

0W-30 Amsoil. Notice my truck def starts better since ive begun running it. Lot easier to crank over and it should be able to handle what most 10W-30 oils can. Cost more but for 25,000 miles or a year we'll see how it runs.

25,000 miles??? I hope thats all highway and not in town. After 6,000 in town miles on my synthetic, or from my wife's Jeep, looks pretty dirty (98% of our miles are in town). I'd go no more than 10,000-15,000 if you do mostly highway driving.

Im not in the north but I live in Missouri and it has been known to get a little cold down here too
I switched to Rotella over the summer (just for the fact that its cheaper to buy it in a 55 gal drum, and when you have 3 diesels too) so I might get the chance to see how well a 15w40 does in the cold
