i slide when it rains so i use 4wd to help keep me under control.

 

Maybe you need new tires? I never slide or have any hydroplaining issues. The only time there is an issue is from a dead stop I cannot go in a hurry or stop in a hurry.
Nothing uncommon with that, drive slower for the road conditions that helps.

But sliding is a lot more fun...

 

4wd doesnt matter on ice.. if your gonna slide your gonna slide. Traction is traction. 4wd with rain may help on a quicker recover but still..loss of traction is still a loss. best thing to do would be to just take foot off gas, turn wheel so u dont goin in a circle and let it recover. Just dont romp on the gas and watch gravel.

Ah yes, I remember when i was a young lad behing the wheel of a 5500lb truck, speeding in poor driving conditions. fun.

The one thing I don't like about the 4x4 engagement on our trucks verses locking hubs is the CAD delay. That 2-3 sec delay is critical in snow/slush when you really need it.
But I really like how I don't have to get out to lock the hubs and backup 10' to get it to disengage.

 

ok well i have used it to try to race the punks on the straights with 4wd in the rain. its funny. but other then that i use two wheel all the time. And to answer the main question. yes th e4d on ice is abolutly fine. if you read the instructions for the 4wd (located on your drivers back side of the sunvisor) it say to use the 4wd in rain, ice and conditions when trction in low.

 

i only use 4wd in the rain if i scare the s*i* out of myself by losing control in 2wd. other than that i stay in 2wd. Does 4wd use more gas?

 

alittle, i notice it but most dont. it is just the use of gears turning making the motor work alittle bit harder. but it shouldnt be noticable. and DONT DONT DONT try to turn hard in any 4wd setting unless you either A. are on soft surface( sand, mud, ice) or B. you want o snap and axle cause it will happen. and it doesnt have to be hard. about half way to either side and it will start to "skip" across the pavement, cuase its lsd. and that skip is the axle screaming at you as i like to think of it

 

i wish i had 4wd. My truck weighs 7000lbs and it is a bummer to try and stop it even in dry conditions. i can get stuck on wet grass and if i accelerate above 1/4 throttle in wet the tires spin. If i turn in wet with just a little aggressive intention i end up sideways across 3 lanes of traffic. The fricken V10 puts out so much torque that on any not hard and dry as hell surface it will send yur as s doing donuts. BUT... its fun as crap!!! and im 18..lol king of flat hard surfaces.......

 

Thanks for the explaination. I used my 4X4 for the first time today because it was icy and sleeting. I thought I had major issues because it did what you described a couple of turns. Now I know
