Hey, i got a question for you all, I have a 2001 ram 4x4 5.9 quad cab. and i was wondering if anyone could tell me what the causes the transfer case to make a loud intermidiate banging noise? sounds like someone is under the truck with a hammer banging. Is this a commen problem? Any Ideas would be appreciated. thanks guys

i have the same truck, and had the same problem. my problem was the chain inside the transfer case was loose and was slipping on the sproket from the torque. the mechanic that told me about mine said to check the oil in the transfer case by taking off the top hex bolt on the front of the transfer case and sticking your pinky finger in it to see if theres any oil and if theres no oil or if the oil inside it is red then your chain is f***ed. and he also said that is a big problem in that truck.
Does you truck have manual trans or automatic? If its manual trans the 5th gear nut may have come loose causing and banging sound, also ck the output shaft on the transfer box, the snap ring does break. To ck the snap ring, remove the rear drive shaft and the four 15mm bolts from tail housing.
