If your dust cover was gone, you need to replace the pistons. This usually encompasses rebuilding the entire brake.


Really, if you don't understand, take it to someone who does. I understand that you want to save money, but brakes are not the place to do it. Brakes prevent you from killing others. Don't cheap out on them.

By "rebuilding the entire brake" do you just mean the calipers (since it's just the dust boots on the calipers)? It's much easier and cheap just to replace them. It took me 30 minutes per side including bleeding, most of which was jacking it up and taking the wheel off.

Yes, if the boot is gone , replace the caliper or rebuild them if you have the proper tools and know how.
