actually that sounds like sensors to me.. I'm not real familiar with these trannies though.. But if you got the 46re like I do, there are sensors that control the shifting, could very well be one of those is going out, works great for a bit when cold, then goes out after warming up.. I am sure someone here will be able to tell you more about the sensors..

As long as his Ram was made 1996-2001, and he has a V8, he has a 46RE.

Yes, I have a 1997 Ram w/ 5.2L Still trying to figure out the problem...

Ive been on vacation, sorry i missed this thread. Here is what i would buy to rebuild a 46re.

All new frictions (i prefer alto)
All new bushings
Steels as needed
Paper and rubber kit, this kit includes all seals, gaskets and such (toledo or precision)
Thrust washers as needed
Governor pressure solenoid and sensor
Sonnax sure cure 46re (will help with rebuild)
Front band
rear band as needed.
Roller clutches as needed
Good quality torque converter (i use Precision of New Hampton)

Youre going to need to tear the unit down to find out what hard parts you may need.
