trans questions again
i was doing alittle bit of reasearch for my truck, i kinda figure i have the a-518 ( 46rh). what is the differance (would this work) to put a a-618 ( 47rh) trans in its place. from what i gather, the 618 was put into the diesals and V_10's of our truck because iot could handle more power. are they the same dimmentions or just plan would it work?
You have the 46RE, not the 46RH. The 46RH was 1994-1995 only (as far as our 2nd gens go, that is). From then on, 46REs. The A518, as it was explained to me, is just a "catch all" for the 46RH and 46RE.
The 47RH/RE (A618) was put into diesels and V10s (Ram 2500s and up). I believe this has been discussed before, but I cannot remember what was decided. I think it would require quite a bit of adapting, it would not be a direct bolt up if I remember correctly. Monte should be able to answer this question more thoroughly.

The physical dimensions of the 47re and 46re are almost identical. The only difference is the bell housing. I dont know how close the bolt patters are. You would have to set them side by side and compare.
The engineers did quite a few necessary upgrades to the 47re using the 46re platform.
The 48re uses a larger output shaft and the tail shaft housing is much larger. The 48re is close to the 47re.

well the pages i read said the same thing monte, that the 47 was the same as the 46, just with more clutch plates to handle more power. now if the bell houseing was differant coulnt i put a 46 bell housing on the 47 and do it that way? that could be just creeative thinking but i have no idea if that is the same.
and to go with the what jason said, what is the differance in the RH and RE? which one is stronger?

The only difference between the RH and the RE is that the RH has a mechanical governor and the RE's shifts are controlled electronically by a solenoid and sensor. They both have the same power handling capability.
ok so it would just be a rebuild. its what im looking at....
how hard is that. mainly the reverse bend.. can the 47 reverse band fit in the 46? probebly not but figured i would ask

He already told you in his last post. And if you want something better you are going to have to shell out the cash and get an APS or Dr. Evil, etc..or do a 5 speed swap.
