Question Overhead Console temp guage not working

I haven't really looked into this, but as long as I can remember, my temp guage on my overhead console hasn't worked. The compass works, but the temp always displays 0C, and when I press a button the screen clears, until I press a button again.

I have no clue about these, so any ideas are nice.

I believe there is a sensor called an Ambient Temp sensor that you can replace.

There is a sensor mounted on the driver's side of the radiator surround that gives the signal to the overhead console readout. The OC code you have on the readout indicates an open circuit in the system.
There is a wiring harness plug that goes into the sensor, and you can short the plug with a jumper and see if the readout changes to SC, which indicates a short in the system. If it does, it indicates a faulty sensor. If it doesn't there is an open circuit between the sensor and the display unit.
You can do a resistance check on the sensor also. The normal readings will be between 336K and 2.48K Ohms.

on later models the Ambient Air Temperature Sensor is actually mounted to the underside of the hood an closes just in front of the A/C condenser. when you pop the hood to look for it, it goes up in the air, over your head.

Default Overhead Console Temperature Sensor

And before you guys start harping about how I haven't searched, I have.

Are just a few articles I've read. I know that the sensor is either beside the radiator on the drivers side or on the hood next to the light, but I still can't locate it. Can anyone describe or show me a picture as to what one looks like? I've looked at Advance Auto Parts online catalogue and they say that an Ambient Air Temperature Sensor isn't applicable for my vehicle.

EDIT: Napa has the sensor: http://www.napaonline.com/NOLPPSE/%2...+50022+2022009

Is this the correct one?

Behind the grill. When you open hood it goes way up in the air over your head. Look up and under the back of the grill. Can't see pic. I'm on my cell phone right now.

I went out and looked all over the back of my grill and there isn't any wires or instruments that would relate to the sensor in question.

I did however find something that looked something like what I thought might be the sensor. It was mounted to the battery tray on the drivers side. There was a wire going in and out of the sensor. One side ran down under the battery tray and one ran to the right of the tray and somewhere around the headlight area. Could that be it?

That should be the battery temp sensor. I'll take a pic of mine tomorrow.

Guys, he has a 1997, so it's going to be down by the raditator.

To the "NEW" OP, it's very possible that the bolt holding it in has fell off, or in my case, the body shop failed to reattach it when they "finsished" their work.

Mine always worked, but one day, I got the same 0C read out. I just assumed the sensor bit the dust, but come to find out, it had become disconnected from its plug. In my case, I lost the sensor all together. Here are some pics of what both the sensor and the plug look like.

Being a 1997, you should be able to locate the plug's location by tracing back through the factory fog light plug. Meaning, both the fog light plug on the driver's side and the ATS plug should tie in at the same end of the harness shield. Pic below shows this.
