2000 RAM 46RE took a torx for the front band(outer) and the rear band took a 5/16 8pt AKA cheese head, double square. In a pinch, Sears hardware (not the same as the regular store) keeps them in stock. Here is the item number.

Craftsman 5/16 in. Easy-to-Read Socket, 8 pt. STD, 3/8 in. drive
Item# 00945791000 Model# 45791
Price $3.79

My rear band was a square bolt, not sure on the size, probably the 5/16. You can get an 8 pt socket for it or you could just use a 12 pt socket as well. As long as the # of pts is divisible by 4 then your good and it will have the right spacing from edge to edge.

A 12 point will not work! You would think that a 12 point would work because of the math involved but it doesn't. The reason is that the square bolt is really not square it has round corners. A 12pt relies on the corners to grab the bolt hence there is no corner so hence it doesn't work. Hopefully this will "put to bed" this faulty logic.

I understand your "logic", but I just rebuilt my trans and adjusted my bands using a 12 pt socket and it worked fine for me. There isn't really much force on the bolt to strip it out if it doesn't have a great grip. Its only 72 in/lbs. Maybe mine was different or something but it worked.
