Your just kidding, right? I have went from 16" stockers, to 15's, and to 17" off road wheels and it never changed my mileage at all (even with different size tires). I don't see how the wheel size would change anything mileage wise.
Now a different size TIRE, and different tread patterns and over lbs. of pressure, sure, but only in an extreme situation in that case would it change 2 MPG.
Actually, 15" wheels are probably lighter which in my opinion would get better mileage (although probably not even noticeable).

The less backspacing the wheel has, the farther it sticks out... meaning you will have better luck with less backspacing. Backspacing is measured from the inside edge of the wheel to the actual mounting surface of the wheel (lay the wheel flat with the back up and measure from the mounting surface to the outside of the wheel).
I have yet to hear about a 15x10 wheel not fitting on a 2nd gen 1/2 ton, and I personally know several people with 15x10 wheels on 2nd gens with no problems. I have a set of 15x12 American Eagle aluminum rims and they rubbed my calipers. I ground the calipers down a little bit (about 8 years ago) and haven't had a problem since.

hey i have a 2001 dodge ram 1500 extended cab black with a 4inch suspenion lift and a 3inch body and 315/70/17 tires on my stock rims just like yours... my question is im wanting a wider rim to make my tires stick out more. but it looks like yours do on your stock rims. how is that possible??? i was just goin to order some 15x10 dick cepek rims to get the wider tires look...
Currently I have the stock Dodge off road edition wheels, which do not "stick out" at all. The ones in my pic of the tires sticking out are 12" wide aluminum ones, which I have since sold.
The 15x10's you are going to order will stick out like you want.
