Default Stupid K&N cleaning question...

Title says it all...I have 2 K&N filters which I have never cleaned...ya ya ya shush!

Anyway, so I am cleaning my truck one today following directions...it is drying now.

What my question is is that after cleaning it looks the same dark color, not the bright red when I bought it. Did I clean it right? Does it never go back to the original color? I just wanna know so I know I cleaned it right before applying the oil, thanks!

The oil you reapply is red, not the filter media.

it should be slightly white when clean, IIRC.

I think it was a uniform gray color when wet with the cleaner solvent and dried lighter. the spray on oil is red and you should apply very lightly when the filter is dry.

Mine was spray on...inside is gray outside is gray/red now Hope I didn't spray to much on, I did 1 light coat moving it quickly waited 1 hr and another quick coat...no drips and wiped off an excessive I saw, plus it is on a towel right now until tomorrow when I put it back on.

Gonna redue the S-bolt thing...my last was too long and pain in the tail to take off and put on...back to home depot I go!

if you have a hack saw you can cut the length of your S-bolt down and 99% of the time have no problems re-threading the nut.

Just make sure you don't over oil it, it can screw up sensors. All you really need to do
is get the filter media red.

Whether you cut it down or make a new one, put the nuts on before you cut it. Then you can just take the nut off and that will clean the threads.

Yea I know the nut on before cutting trick...what is the length (when bent) of everyone's S-bolt?

Mine is 5" and I actually had to bend the dang thing to get the cover off. I am thinking the filter is 3" so maybe 4" at the max?

BTW where is the DIY for the Round Filter Install? I can't seem to find it! Did they remove it or am I just going blind? A link would help if someone finds it!
