A bad fuel pump doesn't generally cause pinging or sputtering. They normally just go out completly. But low pressure will generally just give you a loss of power. How does it run under heavy load? Because of the pinging I might question the fuel quality.

I thought the OEM pump was a Walbro. Doesn't matter...
Run the gauge up along the cowl area.
Tape it face down to the windshield and go for a cruise.
Fuel pressure should be steady around 49 Psi +/- 5 Psi

Carter pumps are junk these days. Just put one in my wife's Alero, couldn't get a Delco fast enough and dealer price was over $800. Pump works but the fuel gauge is off. Probably only last a year anyway...
