2000 diff noise
I have a 2000 2wd ram.. In the last week the following noise has come about:
At 45 exact a noise that sounds like a large bia-ply tire on the highway (roar) developes and carries on until about 65 in which in get quite.. Then it comes back about 85, now, if you let off the gas it becomes very loud.
I had tires and alighnment done about 4,000 miles ago. The tires are goodyear wrangler rt/s
The shop looked it over today, front wheel bearings are good as are the u-joints. The diff is full also.
Anyone have any clues, could it just be crappy tires?
Thanks

RE: 2000 diff noise
I had a 1997 Ram 1500 2WD with the same problem you are experiencing except that mine got louder when accelerating and got quiet when coasting. The problem with my diff was incorrect meshing between the ring gear and the pinion gear. Unfortunatley I let mine go too long and ended up replacing the entire rear diff with a salvage unit. If you get yours looked at soon enough you may be able to just get the gear mesh adjusted and not have to replace the complete diff. I got the salvage diff for $500 and installed it myself so it wasn't too bad. If this noise just started in your truck I would get it looked at ASAP before the gears are permanently damaged.
