when my gears went they werent always grinding because the tooth that chipped off would sometimes sit away from the rest of the gears and not grind them, so it moves, and sometimes it will get set between them and just consistently grind thats why it goes on and off. It happened to my neighbors truck also, but he caught it a lot sooner, but his did the exact same thing, thats what makes me think that that might be your problem, good luck with it and I really hope it isnt!

I really hope its not and that it might be something that could be fixed just by needing to be tightened or having a bushing replaced possibly, but the way you are describing it seems all to much like I remember it in both trucks...

I had a similar problem where the truck would randomly start shaking at anyspeed. check your pitman arm and idler ball joints as well as your tie rod ends inner and outer. Mine were completly shot, pretty easy to replace but you will need to pick up a cheap pitman arm puller less than 15.00 dollars at your local parts store, if you try to force the arm off the steeing box without the puller you'll end up trashing the gear box. Good luck, and you may want to keep it under a hundred till you figure it out your air bag may not be enough.
