Default Tranny problems?

Ok so i bought my truck used about three years ago and it had 71,000 miles on it i just turned 103,000 and the tranny pump seems to make a lil noise sounds like the pump when you put it in reverse and occationally when driving on the highway to get it to shift into overdrive you gotta gently tap the gas and the it shifts in fine the fluid i belive to be origanal its like black and thick i was wondering if changing it is a immediate cause for it to start slipping and giving me more problems than i have now or just leave it alone till its toatally shot and have it rebuild and service accordingly so what do u think drop the pan change fluid and filter or leave it alone.

damn if your trans fluid is looking black and crappy, CHANGE IT NOW
there's prolly metal shavings and particles in it, and its most likely slowly wrecking your tranny

You should be fine, just while your at it I would re-adjust your bands. I definently think that the current fluid is doing more harm than good. It is going to trash your trans faster than if you change it.

Sounds like you already have bigger issues.

MonteC knows his stuff so I would trust his advice. Just so you know though, a lot of people (myself included) neglect their trans until something starts to happen. After that they change the fluid and sometimes adjust their bands. Once that doesn't fix it, they assume that the filter and fluid change made things worse. In reality, the problem just began to surface.

My personal opinion is that pitch black trans oil is doing absolutely no good for your trans. Like MonteC said though, it is probably a sign of bigger problems. I guess it is your call. Either change it out and adjust your bands and see what that does, or head to a rebuild!
