Unhappy Wow, I think I spun a bearing

I was leaving work today, and my engine was making this knocking noise at idle much worse than it used to. It would only do it sometimes. My friend says thats what it sounds like to have a spun bearing..

I drained the oil and put 20-w50 in there, and it quit. I guess I'm gonna buy a new motor.

anyone Have a rebuilt 360 layin around?

Its got 110k on the motor. I got it at 80k

It has always made this noise every once in a while, I never knew what It was. now its just alot worse. I got a defective pcv valve not too long ago, and when I started my truck, It reved up to 2500 RPM when It started, I think thats what did It... I should go get the damn auto parts store to buy me a new motor...

My friend said that he used to know a used car salesman, and If they got a car that was knocking they would put 20w50 in there so they could sell it... pretty fuxed up Its a good trick though

Look- get under the thing and remove the oil pan, grab the rods and move them from side to side, IF you find play-- use a plastigage and measure it.
report back to the thread.
More likely if you can stop it with thicker oil it is not " THAT BAD " if you know what I mean... so before you do anything normal and buy a hole new short block go ahead and spend $60 and buy a fresh set of rod bearing and slap them on.

Hey, good advice.. Thanks, I'll do that for sure.

The knocking noise is very random, correct me if i'm wrong, but that prolly means that it's gonna be the crank "bearing" not any of the rods? Obveously I would replace all of them if I have it open anyways...

am I indangering my motor by running 20w50? im not gonna blow up my oil pump or anythin am I? obveously im babying it, I just need to drive to work and back 7 miles.

thicker oil won't hurt it. some will flame me for this but i don't care - you can also add a bottle of STP to quieten down some noises. i put 300,000 miles on an old chevy 350 with 50w oil and stp.

Thicker oil = whatever in my book .
With as many advances in oil chemical composites over the last 10 - 15 years any vehicle should be OK with any oil ( 5w30 - 10w40 ). I see oil thickness ( referring to 20w 50 ) is needed in warmer weather if the owner is very **** or the engine pretty worn out but that's it.

To the OP try the rod bearings I doubt that the main's are bad YET... And if you find one with play make sure that there isn't any GROOVES on the crank and polish the crank with some SCOTCH BRITE on the way back along with a coat of multi purpose red grease on both sides of the bearings.

I have seen really bad rod knock before with destroyed bearings AND I MEAN DESTROYED BEARINGS!!! but no damage to the crank and with fresh bearings calling it the day.

**** DOESN'T HAPPEN CRAPPY ROD BEARING DO ! HAHAHA

BTW, I have always wondered

its not really a bearing, its a sleve with oil pressure.. Is this still considered a type of bearing?
